Don’t look now…
Written by Charles on September 26, 2007 – 4:17 pmI hate that phrase, “don’t look now,” yet I can’t really think of any other way to put it right now. The Braves are finally playing well enough to get to October. That’s the good news. The bad news is that not only are they 3 games out of the wild card with only 5 to play, there are also 3 teams ahead of them. Jumping over 3 teams in just 5 days is a tall task for any team and because of that I am tempering my hopes for a late September miracle. However, it appears as if we may have been helped out by the scheduling gods, so let’s take a look at the remaining games for each of the teams ahead of us, plus our own.
San Diego: The Padres have one more against the Giants today, and then they close out the season with 4 against the Brewers who are desperately trying not to have a complete collapse after their great start.
Philadelphia: Obviously with 2 more games against the Phillies, we can pull even with them if we sweep the series. After that, they close with 3 against the Nationals. The Nationals have more or less been owned by the Phillies this year, so sweeping our series takes on even more importance.
Colorado: The Rockies have two more games against the Dodgers, and then close out their season with 3 at home against the Division leading Diamondbacks.
Atlanta: After finishing up their series with the Phillies, the Braves travel to Houston to finish out their regular season. The Astros are having a down year and the Braves won the series in Atlanta, the only other time they’ve played each other this year.
So it looks like the Braves got a break with the scheduling, but realistically nothing short of running the table for the last 5 games will get them to October. And even that might not be enough…
