Heard The Latest Rumor?

November 15, 2007 – 9:12 pm

According to a Boston television station, there are 4 teams that have topped the Red Sox’s offer for World Series MVP Mike Lowell. The teams are the Angels, Cardinals, Yankees, and somehow, the Atlanta Braves. All four teams have reportedly offered 4 years for a total of between $55 million and $60 million, which tops Boston’s three year offer. The other three teams all make sense here, but why the Braves? They obviously can’t put Chipper back in the outfield as his offense was abysmal during those years. And with Tex on first, that leaves Lowell without a position. It could just be a rumor started by Lowell’s agent to try and squeeze a forth year out of the Red Sox, which is where I believe Lowell would like to remain. Either way, it’s an interesting rumor that makes absolutely no sense if you ask me.

What about putting Lowell at shortstop? And why would we do that instead of paying Renteria to come back?

Renteria was 10 mil a year. Lowell would be 15 mil. Lowell is much more of a power hitter than Renteria - more HRs, twice as many RBIs last year. OPS is pretty much the same, avg isn’t radically different. They’re both over .300 hitters last year. Interesting though - don’t know if this is worth our time or money. Teixeira may be a better deal.

The only fit I see for Lowell is at SS, though.

Lowell really has no fit with the Braves and how the infield is set up right now. I agree that his only feasible spot would be at short, but definitely not worth the pricetag to do so. That’s money better spent locking up Tex and filling some gaps in the bullpen in my opinion.

Lowell may be an outstanding baseball player, but I just can’t see him playing shortstop . . . or leaving Boston for that matter.
