Roster Update

So comes the nearly daily update regarding Tom Glavine… Whether or not Glavine knew last night, the Braves made an official offer for Tom Glavine yesterday.  It apparently wasn’t too late in the day as Glavine’s agent was planning on submitting a counterproposal by the end of day today.  Best guess is that the Braves’ offer was between $6 and 8 million.  We’ll see what terms are eventually agreed on - there is little doubt in my mind that Glavine will be a Brave before this time next week.

In addition, the Braves traded Oscar Villarreal to the Houston Astros for Josh Anderson, a young centerfielder who batted .358 in 67 at bats after playing well at the AAA level.  We should see him fill in at center field for us while we work on developing our prospects further.  However, Wren stressed today that if they see someone else they feel is a better fit, they won’t hesitate to sign him as well.

Firstly, I feel more and more secure about Glavine becoming a Brave again.  I realize we could find a younger pitcher but Glavine will provide the extra experience needed to help develop our younger guys.  Then add to that the fact he can pitch, and he’s the fit we need right now.

I’m glad to see that we’re trading for some young, inexpensive outfield talent.  Anderson may be what we need to fill CF for a couple years, or even to be a portion of a platoon with Willie Harris - leaving Diaz full time in left field.  Speaking of Diaz, he can straight up rake and should play full time, in my opinion.  Also, Anderson is likely a great complement to Francoeur - he stole 41 bases in AAA before coming up to the majors last year and is obviously very speedy.

We’ll have more on Glavine as soon as it is revealed.  Enjoy your weekend!
