Welcome To Atlanta (Again)

Tom Glavine is the newest addition to the 2008 rotation. The Braves struck a one year, $8 million deal with the lefty today, the AJC is reporting. The Braves and Glavine are going to hold a press conference Monday to announce the signing officially.

Now, let me apologize for not being quite as well-connected to the Braves as the AJC is, but I can’t help it. We were right alongside them in reporting on the rumors leading up to today, but are a little behind with the announcement. We’ll work on getting better.

The 303 game-winner should be expected to eat up 30+ games this year and around 200 innings. I personally expect him to be a good complement to Tim Hudson and John Smoltz, and Hampton (if he stays healthy). We’ll probably see Chuck James fill out the fifth spot, if I had to guess.  The person familiar with the situation says that Glavine has already taken a physical for the Braves – which explains Friday night’s communication between him and his wife.

Glavine signed for $8 million with the Braves after turning down a $13 million option with the Mets earlier this year. It’s a bit of a hometown discount – as his family makes their home in Alpharetta, GA. I admire that Tom is willing to make $5 million less in order to be near his family during the offseason and school year – he’s a great guy, a gentlemen, and a hell of a pitcher.

Our rotation may not be youthful, but it will be potent. And fun to watch.

Welcome home, Glavine.

Colin

I don’t know about everybody else but I am extremely pumped up about getting Glavine back, he may be getting old but he is still a dominating pitcher and will definitely be a productive addition to the already strong rotation.

I’ll definitely agree with you Ethan. It was great seeing Glavine at FanFest this weekend and I can’t wait to see him back on the mound.
