Winter Meetings’ First Moves

Frank Wren and his posse are in full force at the Winter Meetings in Nashville with a few tasks to accomplish. Rumor has it they’re looking for a center fielder with a short contract, a backup catcher, and a bench player that can back up Yunel at shortstop.

Wren pulled the trigger on a deal today that sent right-handed reliever Jose Ascanio to the Cubs for left-handed reliever Will Ohman and utility infielder Omar Infante. With Ron Mahay expected to sign elsewhere, the Braves need a solid left-handed reliever and are looking for Ohman to fill that role. Ohman has a .196 career opponents’ average by left-handed hitters - proving him very effective in the long-run, even though he struggled some last season. Omar Infante will be the backup for Yunel Escobar - he hit .271 last season and can fill in many holes on the field.

In my opinion, this was a move that probably had to be made, but I really liked Ascanio. He had some great stuff and seemed to be enthusiastic and a solid player. I’ll miss him and wouldn’t want to face him if I were a Braves player.

What are your thoughts on the move? More to come as it unfolds out of Tennessee.
