Andruw to Dodgers
Written by Colin on December 6, 2007 – 11:30 amWhat we’ve known has been coming since the end of the season is now a reality – sources are reporting that Andruw Jones has signed a two-year deal with the Dodgers in the range of $36 million. The Dodgers are competing with the Angels for the LA market (The Angels just signed Torii Hunter) and felt the need to fill their centerfield gap with one of the best in the business.
Now, as good defensively as Andruw is, I can’t see paying him $18 million a year. Hell, if you’re looking for defense that’s almost that good, claim Willie Harris off waivers. Andruw’s offensive production – while still powerful – is not nearly as consistent as it used to be. Seriously, a .230 average would not get $18 mil a year with any other agent than Scott Boras – another testament to the vice-like grip he holds over much of baseball.
The Dodgers look to become a serious contender in the NL West picture. With a little more attention to the roster, and under the eye of new manager Joe Torre, they will likely make a run for it.
In something that affects the NL East – the Marlins traded Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to the Detroit Tigers for a package of six prospects. Firstly, the Marlins are worse than they used to be – their highest paid player will make around $1 million next season. Secondly, the Tigers may be the best team in the game now. They’ve added two great players to an already stellar roster. Now, I’m a little upset the Braves didn’t trade for Dontrelle – he would have made our decent starting rotation a very good starting rotation.
We’ll see where Johan Santana ends up – chances are he’ll go to Boston. Echoing Matt from a conversation the other day – let’s dream for ten seconds and hope he somehow ends up in Atlanta. Gosh, that’d be amazing.
More news as it falls.
