Javy Back
Written by Colin on December 17, 2007 – 9:55 pmThe Braves signed former catcher Javy Lopez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training today. He was formerly released by Colorado during Spring Training 2007. He’ll try and earn a backup spot behind Brian McCann along with Brayan Pena, Corky Miller, and Clint Sammons.
If in fact Javy makes the team out of spring training, he’s expected to make around $1 million.
What are your thoughts on Javy signing with the club once again? Think he still has some baseball in him? Or are the Braves signing too many former Braves stars with hopes they can retread veterans who have played long past their prime?

i think they’re bringing back a big name that people will love to see play, but i don’t think we’ll get to see him play. and if he does get to play, i think we’ll be disappointed in him. i just want brian mccann to stay there as our go-to guy for now. good for javy, but for one, he’s not worth that much money to not even play all that much, and secondly, i just think that we’re starting the braves reunion tour 08.

It is my presonal belief that two catchers will come out of spring training, Lopez and Pena. Javy as an emergency catcher/pinch-hitter and Pena as the primary backup. Now, I do smewhat agree with Lindsay in that the Bravos are bringing him back to be a crowd pleaser, however, I don’t think him being on the roster will be all for not, according to some people inside of the organization, he’s worked hard in the offseason and has the potential for a descent year for a 37-going-on-38-year-old. Besides, if we can’t have Julio, Javy isn’t a bad replacement.

Welcome to the site, Cameron.
I’m also going to have to agree that Javy is partly being brought back to appease the fans, but I don’t see anything wrong with that. His offensive prowess isn’t what it was during his first stay with the Braves, but he’s still one of the well-known names of the past here in Atlanta.
You bring up a good point about Julio. The rest of the staff here at BravesBlast knows I love Julio and hope he’ll end up in Atlanta in a coaching position.
I’m looking forward to seeing how the preseason and training camp goes for Javy. I’d love to see him in Atlanta once again.

I think the first time I see Javy Lopez catch for Tom Glavine again I might cry.
