2007 In Review: Top 10 Braves Moments

Today we’re looking back at 2007 with BravesBlast’s Top 10 Braves Moments from 2007. After many rounds of voting, revisions, adjustments, and arguments, the BravesBlast crew presents what its most memorable moments from the 2007 season.

#10 - After many years of success, most notably the 14 consecutive division titles beginning in 1991, John Schuerholz stepped down from the general manager position and into the role of President of the Braves. His legacy as GM will obviously be the division titles and the brilliance with which he negotiated trades that favored the Braves time and time again.

#9 - Willie Harris, one of BravesBlast’s favorite players (shush, you haters out there), had an amazing performance on July 21 against the St. Louis Cardinals. Willis was 6-6 with two triples, 6 RBIs, and a stolen base. Now, we won’t get to see him play except against us from now on, but July 21 remains one of the most memorable moments of 2007.

#8 - Yunel Escobar and Jarrod Saltalamacchia had great starts to the 2007 season and have great things in store for them. While Saltalamacchia was traded to the Texas Rangers, Yunel will start at Shortstop this coming year for the Braves. It was tons of fun to watch these youngsters develop as players and bring energy and enthusiasm that comes with the excitement of stepping onto a major league field for the first time.

#7 - The release of Bob Wickman. The only thing the man could close is a concession stand. ‘Nuff said.

#6 - Chipper Jones and Edgar Renteria battling it out for the batting title at the end of the season. Even though neither of them won the title, it was great to see not one but two Braves players competing. It’s been a while since we saw Braves players involved in the batting race.

#5 - The Braves resigning Tom Glavine. Great to see an old face back in town. He’s a class act, through and through. We can’t wait to see him next season.

#4 - John Smoltz reaching 200 wins. He’ll never reach 300 wins, but that’s only because he has over 150 saves. Congratulations, Smoltzie.

#3 - Bobby Cox breaking the ejections record. I saw this one in person, and it was much like Bobby - effective but understated - it happened during a commercial break. We love Bobby for defending the Braves and guiding them throughout the years. Here’s to at least another year of his guidance and fire.

#2 - Signing Brian McCann to a six year, $27 million extension. Glad we locked him up for years to come. We can’t wait to see him continue to develop over the next six years.

#1 - Trading for Mark Teixeira. Glad to see the Braves make a gutsy move and trade for some real talent before the trade deadline. We need more of the “win now” attitude. Loved this move, and we want more like it.

Happy New Year! We’ll bring you the Top 10 things we’re looking forward to in 2008 tomorrow!

Cheers!
