2009 – AAA Ball to Gwinnett

Written by Colin on January 15, 2008 – 6:23 pm

It’s official – the AAA team is moving to Gwinnett after just one year – we’ll have baseball in 2009.  The Braves will rent a stadium from the county for $250,000 a year for 30 years beginning next year.  Gwinnett County will design and build the stadium without much input from the team.

Richmond apparently is not happy that the Braves will be departing, but they can’t do much about it and the team has been there since the 1960’s.  So, barring something crazy, we’ll have our AAA team just miles away in 2009.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the Gwinnett Braves.

13.7 miles from my house, Colin. I’m ready and waiting.

I’m excited to see this deal go through. There will definitely be BravesBlast trips to see the Gwinnett Braves play on weekends when the Atlanta Braves are out of town.

We’ll have to drag some other fans along with us.

We can get Sheryl a shirt. I think she definitely qualifies as one of the most dedicated BravesBlast fans at the moment. And I definitely appreciate that.

I guess we can still do trips this season to Rome and Atlanta, right?

i’d also like to hit myrtle beach once. i know it’s a 6.5 hour drive (for me it is, for jonathan that means about 4.5 hours), but i think one long weekend would be a good road trip for us.

    and i’m all about rome.

Let’s get a Rome trip together this year – it’d be fun.

Besides, we decided to hit all the farm teams this season. Let’s get started!

Oh wait, have to wait for the season.

I guess that’ll be our unofficial announcement that this year we plan to hit at least one game for each of the Braves teams.

It certainly will be fun to go see Chipper rehab in Gwinnett for 3 bucks, by 2009 he’ll probably be rehabing about 85 games a year.

It took the Braves all of about 20 minutes after the announcement today to email me to ask if I wanted to put a deposit down for Gwinnett Braves season tickets as they were giving priority to Atlanta Braves season ticket holders………I wonder how much the tickets to Gwinnett will be?

It’ll definitely be nice to have such easy access to the rehab assignments however.

I live just a few miles from State Mutual stadium and the Rome Braves the single A franchise. What I would like to know is what impact will the Gwinnett team have on the Rome franchise ? In the past players from the atlanta team have been sent to rome to rehab because it’s closer than Richmond and Mississippi. Will these players be sent in the future to Gwinnett to rehab because of the better competition in the AAA ranks and the closer proximity ? Also a fair percentage of the attendance comes from the Atlanta area and will they be more tempted to drive to Gwinnett than Rome for a minor league game ? Also how does the ticket and concession prices compare in AAA compared to A ? There have been discussions on how the team will affect the Atlanta attendance, but has the same been looked at concerning Rome.
