Santana Still Going Nowhere
January 23, 2008 – 10:38 amSo the Twins, Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets have pretty much run the blogosphere dry with their ridiculously long negotiations around Johan Santana. Someone really should go ahead and make a move here. First we had the Yankees and Red Sox as main suitors, with the Mets as a wild card underdog of sorts. Then the Yankees were up, then Red Sox up, and Mets looking like they were out of it. Now the St. Paul Pioneer Press is reporting…
The Twins say they’re not panicking while holding out for the best deal for Johan Santana. But word within baseball circles is that offers by the Yankees (no more Phil Hughes) and Red Sox are diminishing by the week. Best bet now for a trade of the two-time Cy Young Award winner appears to be with the Mets in a deal that would not include fast-rising hitter Fernando Martinez.
Now of course this isn’t a deal yet - we could see some more crazy swings at any time.
ESPN is running a bit on SportsCenter this morning - apparently nothing has changed lately, and when asked to predict where Santana is going to end up, the Twins GM is quoted as saying “I’d like to lay low on that.” SportsCenter is reporting it’s still a three-team race with no clear front-runner.
Where will Santana end up? Nobody knows, but we’ll hope it’s not with the Mets - I wouldn’t want to see them re-tool with Santana. He would make it tougher on the Braves, that’s for sure.
On another note, Octavio Dotel signed a two-year, $11 million contract with the White Sox. I liked what I saw of Dotel, but I’m not sure he’s worth $5.5 million a year.

Speculation is a hard thing to read. Butyou have to read into the Twins GM’s comment a little bit. I think that the Mets are going to end up being the go-to team. WHy else would someone deny comment on something very exciting. Unless of course there is a deal in the works, but I feel like that would have resulted in a different type of comment. It sounds to me like the Yanks and the Bo Sox have maybe backed off the deal, and they’re just not too happy about that.
Go to the Mets, Santana. Bring it on!

Haha, I’m going to have to disagree with you there, Rue. The last thing I want to see is Santana going to the Mets.

you’re disagreeing with me why? because you don’t WANT to see him go there, or you don’t THINK he’s going there? there’s a pretty big difference.
