Mets Close In On Santana
Written by Colin on January 29, 2008 – 5:00 pmAs we take out our favorite stick to beat this dead horse one last time, it does appear that the Mets are now the favorite in the Johan Santana sweepstakes. ESPN is reporting that the Twins requested final offers and the Red Sox and the Mets have made offers, with the Yankees now reportedly out completely. It also appears that the Mets have made the best offer, with some combination of minor league and pitching prospects (different sources report differing things).
So nothing is certain yet, and with the life this story has had throughout the past few months, we could see him end up in Yankee pinstripes at the last minute. That said, we’ve had at least one source report that the Mets deal is almost a certainty at this point, with details to be worked out.
In order to trade for Santana, the Mets will have to sign him to a massive extension that will likely be in the range of six years and $150 million. That’s massive money, people, and the Mets appear to be ready to spend it. With Santana at the top of their rotation, the Mets have an entirely different look, but we’ll delve into this in a later article when we have time to discuss that in detail.
In other NL East transaction news, the Phillies signed free-agent third baseman Pedro Feliz to a 2 year, $8.5 million contract. Feliz is a defensive upgrade for sure and isn’t shabby with the bat either - he hit .253 with 72 RBIs and 20 HRs last season for San Francisco.
More on the Santana deal as we hear it…
