Friday Fun – on Chipper and the Mets

Written by Colin on February 8, 2008 – 12:04 am

Well it’s Friday and we’re one day closer to pitchers and catchers reporting next Thursday on Valentines day. For those of us who are single, it’s what we’ll have to look forward to. Until then, there’s plenty happening in the baseball world/blogosphere.

For one, Mets fans seem upset that anyone would doubt their acquisition of Johan Santana as a one-man savior. Over at MetsMerized they’re making a big deal out of my statement that they may regret the money they’re paying Santana in the years to come. In the article by the ‘Ropolitans, they lay claim to the fact that the Mets are a big-market team in the vein of the Yankees. I’d only like to remind those already pre-crowning the Mets as ’08 World Series Champions that much like the Beatles, the Yankees have shown us that money can’t buy ya love.

In Braves news, Chipper Jones showed up over on AJC.com yesterday and today and commented on one of David O’Brien’s blogs as “You Kno Who” and proceeded to go back and forth with the fans in quite a few exchanges. He addressed hunting, Smoltz’s future, his thoughts on the rotation, and answered my question about who he thinks should manage after Bobby with “nobody can even imagine not playing for Bobby. He’s a lifer.” I think it’s neat to watch a player drop by and spend time interacting with his fans. He’s sad to see Shea go – and he’s nowhere near ready to retire – says he enjoys beating the Mets too much.

So all you Mets fans dropping by, talk to me when you’ve got that World Series trophy in the Mets clubhouse. I’m not saying Santana doesn’t help – he makes your pitching staff a legitimate threat – but he only pitches once every five games. He’ll net you 4-5 more wins a season than that other starter spot you’re replacing.

It promises to be an interesting year – that’s for sure. I’m just unwilling to concede the division. And neither are the Braves.

i looked at that MetsMerized blog, and it appears, atleast to me, that they are lacking in the intelligence department, but you cant blame them… they are from new york

anyway, them being critical about your Santana comment is rediculous, because if you pay a guy that much money, you should expect an over-the-top year

and i especially liked how they said that since you were from Atlanta, that you couldnt comprehend the amount of money a big-market team pulls in… that makes me laugh

I fully agree with Cameron on his first comment. They are from New York so we have to overlook their lack of intelligence and cockiness.
I don’t care who they get to play for them the team is still lacking the heart that Atlanta has always had. That’s what makes us great and what is going to help us get our position back with the team we have this year!

You know, the Mets guys have good points. However, Colin, you do as well.

I’m actually really happy this happened. I really think we will have a few solid players, and I’m nervous about a few positions (namely outfield). The only really good thing i see out of this is a very competitive cut-throat season.

As for New Yorkers, the closest you’ve got in terms of personality is me, i tend to be right all the time – or at least wholeheartedly believe that. So no matter what you do, you won’t make a valid point in their eyes, so stop fighting back. Or bring bigger guns to the table. Those are the only two choices.

I always enjoy DOB’s stuff on the AJC (his article yesterday was awesome) and the part with Chipper was a great bonus.

The National Leage East summary I keep hearing is that the Phillies are lacking in pitching and the Mets are lacking in offense, and the Braves are a bit more balanced. Of course I am constantly drinking the “home koolaid.”

But I do often find a lot of the fans north of the Mason/Dixon line tend to dismiss other teams as less then viable.

Until, that is, say, the play-offs.

I went even further into the bowels of the MetsMerized article i commented on above, and I was disappointed by another Braves blog, Chop-N-Change, for being wussies over Johan. They seemed scared by the number 57, and gave fuel to that burning Mets Bonfire of trash talk and ignorance. Then I read a comment that called all other NL East fans HATERS, though I do hate the Mets, for not appreciating the Mets. Look, I’ll admit that Santana makes them better, but for the Mets supporters to be screaming NL Champs and the best team in baseball is stupid. There are no guarantees in baseball, look at Zito in SF. The Mets are an above-average team now, but the people on that blog say DYNASTY, no, one year of success+one pitcher does not equal a dynasty, give me 3 future hall of famers that proved themselves as dominant pitchers in the NL and 14 straight divisional titles under the control of one of the greatest managers of all time, and then scream dynasty.
