Inflammation in Soriano’s Elbow?

Written by Colin on March 5, 2008 – 12:46 pm

Bobby Cox confirmed earlier this week that Rafael Soriano has some slight inflammation in his right elbow. Now this may not seem like a big deal considering it didn’t end up headlining injury reports, but he had Tommy John surgery on the same elbow a few years back.  He has sat out a few games because of a queasy stomach, and Cox says he should get into a game by the weekend.  I’d link you to the report – I saw it earlier today but can’t locate it right now.

We’ll keep you updated as we hope that this won’t become an issue for Soriano, especially since we just signed him to a multi-year contract.  I have little doubt that he’ll come through spring training just fine and be a very successful closer for us this year.

This is the type of thing that causes me some worry early in the season. The lack of a real closer is something that has haunted us in the past few years. Honestly, ever since Smoltz switched back to the starting role. I don’t really see Soriano as a true power closer, but he’s better than what we’ve had to do in the past couple of years. Let’s hope it heals up quickly and cleanly….

Anyone up for bringing back Mark Wohlers?

From what I’ve heard now in addition to the original information, it appears that Soriano’s soreness is similar to a lot of issues that come up early in spring training for a lot of pitchers.

I don’t think it’s something to worry about too much.
