Hampton, Braves Beat Astros
Written by Colin on March 24, 2008 – 11:57 amThe second, and unfortunately the last, stop on our spring training tour was Sunday’s Braves vs. Astros matchup at Champion Stadium in Disney’s Wide World of Sports. Firstly, the facility there is very impressive – a great place to watch baseball. I felt like I was watching a college game, except all the big league players were there.
Despite Jonathan’s mantra of “watch this next pitch carefully, it might be Hampton’s last,” Mike did us proud, giving up two runs in six innings. In the sixth, it looked like he thought he was pitching batting practice, as he gave up back-to-back solo home runs. Before that though, he looked good, striking out four and giving up six hits. If he stays healthy, and I’m beginning to build confidence that he can for a period of time, he’ll be a valuable addition to our rotation this spring.
The Braves struck early, with Tex knocking in two in the first before scoring on Gregor Blanco’s triple. Blanco continues to impress, as he went 3-3 yesterday after starting and finished the game playing in right field. Brian McCann didn’t start, but he came into the game late and absolutely destroyed a ball into the Braves’ bullpen.
Chris Resop, Royce Ring, and Manny Acosta all looked good in their outings as well. I expect we’ll see Ring and Acosta in the ‘pen to start the year, but not 100% sold on Resop yet. It’s possible he sticks around, however.
Loved the game, loved the facility, and loved the trip. We’ll wrap it up in our upcoming trip recap. All of us are highly dissatisfied to be back in Atlanta at work and in classes. It’s far too cold here.
Until next year, Florida.

Hey guys,
I hope y’all are having fun down there in FL.
I know it was probably pretty cool to see Hampton pitch so well yesterday afternoon.
I’m still anxious about him but he looks good so far.
So Yates hasn’t gotten any appearances but you’re right, Ring looked good and I kind of like having another lefty to go with Ohman.

Hey JB –
It was good to see Hampton do well. I hope he can stay healthy and away from freak injuries, but I guess that’s not something we can control at all. Rumor has it that Yates is going to be shipped out – I’ll have an article on the various trade rumors later today.
Have a good one.

Hey ya’ll -
I am glad that you enjoyed your trip to Champions Staduim. I am lucky enough to live in Orlando and I enjoy seeing the Braves play there two or three times every spring. It is, in my opinion, the best minor league stadium in Florida.
I attended the Braves/Astros game also this weekend. I was really impressed with Resop’s performance. His ability to locate his pitches while throwing mid-to-upper-90’s pitches – on what seemed like every pitch – was impressive. I certainly would not want to be facing that in the 7th inning after the rigors and effort of getting throught the first 6!
Hopefully, he will be a valuable elem, enmt to our bullpen this year.
I was less impressed with Ring….but with the trade of Tyler Yates, we may be able to have both of these fellas in our ‘pen.
Ya’ll have a great day – the team heads north tomorrow!

Thanks for dropping by. We loved Champions stadium. We were much more impressed than our stop over at Space Coast Stadium.
Resop is impressive – I agree with you, he’ll be a valuable part of the bullpen this year.
Keep checking by – hope you can make it up to Atlanta a couple times during the season for games. If so, drop us a line.
We can’t wait for the exhibition games this weekend! Have a good one.
