Braves Baseball Is Back

March 30, 2008 – 7:51 pm

As I sit here on the couch, watching ESPN’s tour of the Nationals new stadium, it’s finally starting to sink in that baseball is officially back.  Soon, we’ll be sitting in Turner Field watching the game and surely cursing the summer heat that seems to come out of nowhere every year.  But that doesn’t matter; it’s baseball season, folks!

Tonight we’ll get to see President Bush throw out the first pitch to kick off Nationals Park.  We’ll also see the Braves new alternate uniforms for 2008.  They’re blue-on-blue uniforms with navy blue hats with the Braves logo ‘A’ in white.

The ESPN analysts’ World Series Predictions were just on as well:
Steve Phillips - Tigers (W) vs. Mets
Eric Young - Red Sox (W) vs. Braves
John Kruk - Cubs (W) vs. Indians
Karl Ravech - Cubs (W) vs. Tigers

Is this the year for the Braves?  It all starts tonight….

Well KJ K’s to start off but we got Esco on base.

How do y’all like the new alternate uni’s?

Nationals Park is definitely a beautiful place from the looks of it. I think I’ll have to try to make a trip up there this year.

Great at bat from Yunel getting down 0-2 and fighting through to a walk in a 10-pitch series.

I’m a fan of the uniforms. I like the plain look sometimes. I definitely like the alternate hats.

  4. By Bill on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

The uni’s are ok. Not as good as the Sunday Home Red’s the we have had the last few years. Do we still have those for this season?

  5. By bravesnuworld on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

Oh my god how awful was that lady singing the National Anthem? My cats were screaming.

  6. By Smitty on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

The new uniforms were a bit of a surprise and I thought they were all right.

The cap is essentially the same as what they used for road games from 67-72.

Huddy started off a little shakey, but seems to be settling down.

But, yeah, we are underway and officially working toward October baseball.

(Good seeing you guys at the ING today)

Well, the National Anthem was some opera singer…..not exactly my cup of tea so I don’t really know what to say about it….

Huddy just gave up two runs. This is where we need to get better. We seem to give up a lot of first/second inning runs. It’ll be a big help to the team.

Good seeing you today as well, Smitty. I’ve spent the rest of the day sleeping for the most part.

What was I saying about Huddy settling down?

The anthem was not bad as far as ‘operatic Anthem performers’ go. I am not a fan of Divas performing for sporting events. But, this is DC, and they need to go all ‘highbrow’ on us…..
Finally we get out of the first - time to go to work fellas!!!!!! Break out the lumber!

  10. By Jonathan on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

Well, we made it out of the first, so hopefully Hudson can get in a groove and get a good outing in. Time to turn on the offense (and keep an eye out for the first tick on the “Andruw would’ve got that” counter.

Frenchie grounding out on a first pitch . . . shocking.

  12. By Bill on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

Frenchy swings at the first pitch - some things never change!!!!

  13. By Jonathan on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

Good relay by the Nats, McCann didn’t stand a chance on that one. Though, he didn’t get the best break in the bounce off of the wall. Too bad he didn’t get just a little more on that ball.

  14. By Bill on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

Brian should know better - he is slow as Christmas!!!!

  15. By Jonathan on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

7 pitch inning . . . that’s much more like it for Huddy. Hopefully he can settle into that rhythm for a few innings now.

  16. By Jonathan on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

KJ getting picked off . . . we need to stop losing base runners that way.

    Great fielding by Yunel however.

2-3-4 coming up . . . we need to get the bats going.

  17. By Dillon on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

So does anyone know anything about when they’ll be wearing those alts? They’re amazing with the blue on blue IMO. Wonder if we’re still gonna have the reds on Sundays.

Go Chip! Hope to see a lot more of that this season.

Dillon - The blue-on-blues are going to be the road alternate jerseys for Sunday road games. We’ll still be wearing the reds at home.

Here’s an AJC link about them: http://www.ajc.com/services/content/sports/braves/stories/2008/03/30/uniforms_0331.html

  30. By Jonathan on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

So Joe Simpson doesn’t approve of comparing Kotsay to Andruw. I guess that means he wouldn’t like the “Andruw Would’ve Gotten That” counter then haha.

  31. By JB in ATL on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

i think we’re up to two right now but anyone coulda had those.

  32. By Jonathan on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

Yeah, we’re going to stick with ones that Kotsay misses that Andruw definitely could’ve gotten to I think.

Just the start-of-season jitters . . . they’ll work it out just fine :) Huddy at least seems to have settled in on the mound. I think we can get a solid 7 out of him tonight.

Good to see Willie out there, even if it is in a Nats uniform. I miss having him around Atlanta.

I liked Willie too. Hated to see Langerhans do so poorly last year too. I wish them both the best though

when they finally settle in well be fine. i have a question for everybody how do you think hamptons gonna do?

  49. By Jonathan on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

Well, I’ll leave the Hampton issue to the masses, I think my opinion’s well known. I need about 10 starts out of him before I have any faith in his durability. When we saw him pitch in spring training, he looked good, but I just want proof that he can last.

  50. By SG ATL Born and Raised on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

thats is excatly where im at i need to see starts before i say anything

  51. By JB in ATL on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

10 starts would be nice and the indicators have been good but you can’t be too sure with Hampton. He’s lookin AWESOME so far though

  52. By Connie/BravesFan on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

Thank you JB! I think Hampton will do just fine. He has lived on the umm sorry guys………MLB “welfare” system the last 2 yrs. He knows it is up to him to redeem his self… Just my opinion.

  55. By Jonathan on Mar 30, 2008 | Reply

I think Hampton needs a good season to get signed by the Braves or anyone next year. He won’t see a contract near what he’s making this year either way.
