Metspocalypse Now: Pedro Martinez Hurt

Written by Colin on April 1, 2008 – 11:50 pm

It’s time. Yes, the Mets’ second game of the regular season and their number two starter, the great Pedro Martinez left the game after reportedly feeling a pop in his hamstring in the fourth inning. Now, I’m no expert. I don’t have a degree in physical training. But feeling your muscles pop – especially muscles you use in performing your job as the “best #2 starter in baseball” (yeah, right) – isn’t a good thing.

Of course, now he’s on his way back to New York for an MRI and is listed as day-to-day. They’re calling it a strain. But Pedro has been increasingly fragile recently and I believe he’s said he won’t do another extensive rehab like he had to do after shoulder surgery.

So that’s right, Mets fans. Cry your little hearts out. Fret as you watch part of your dynamic duo fade into nothing. Let’s face it, he’s old. He’s washed up. And that’s why the Mets like him – they’re a team full of old washed up former stars. And I dare say he’s not the only Met that will go down this season. He’s just the first, and I hope he’s not the most high profile one.

They’ve started their seasonal collapse early, and I for one am glad to watch it. Someone grab a beer, this will be a fun one.

Update: Pedro is on the 15 day DL, and though his MRI results have not yet been released, it is thought that he experienced a slight tear of the hamstring.  We’ll have more as we hear it.

I’ll anxiously await the MRI results tomorrow. Who knows? It could be nothing, but it sounds like there’s a pretty good possibility he’ll spend at least a little time on the DL.

Old and washed up pitchers? And the Braves rotation is populated with?

Hilarious. Braves are going to have a worse record than the Nats this season

Oh Larry, let me make that an addendum. The Mets have old and washed up players in general – not just pitchers.

The Braves? We’ve got a great staff of veteran arms. They’re not good for many more years, but quite frankly right now they’re one of the NL’s better rotations. Anyone who can’t admit that is blinded by ignorance.

As far as having a worse record than the Nats, they may have that right now, but we’re two games down bud. The Mets currently have a record worse than Washington.

I’m no expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Seriously…why can’t we get through the first week without an injury?! Would that have been too much to ask?!

Andrew, man, I feel your pain. We still have our fingers crossed about Hampton pitching tomorrow’s game, though. Let’s pray he doesn’t trip coming out of the dugout.

I’m far more worried about Hampton successfully putting on his jersey than walking to the mound . . . I think everyone knows now how little faith I have in that man.

We have Petey. You have Hampton.

We’re really more alike that we all like to think.

We pull for a much better team, Andrew. You know it’s true.

What nasty stuff! I loved it when the divisions were realigned & the Braves were moved to the NL East. I never want to play a team that is not at full strength due to injury. Bring on the best & let the chips fall where they may. Remember it’s a long season.

    Wow…such bitterness….

I agree with Al…I hope Pedro heals up pretty quickly…I’d hate to see what has the potential to be a four team race (ok, ok, I know…it’s early) over just because of an injury.

Besides…it’s kinda petty to hope the other team gets hurt….

Because if Pedro’s hurt, how are the Braves gonna score 6 or 7 runs off of him????

I, for one, am glad that it wasn’t an actual tear. You don’t want to see someone that, in their day, was one of the dominant pitchers in the game, go out on a career-ending injury.
