Hudson Looks To Right The Ship
April 16, 2008 – 5:55 pmAfter falling hard to the Marlins (8-5) last night, the Braves (5-8) look to Tim Hudson (2-0, 2.14) to get them back on track with a mark in the win column. The big question is, however, can the Braves get their offense going against Mark Hendrickson (2-1, 4.15) tonight? As seen against the Marlins last night, the Braves’ lack of offensive production can doom a game no matter how good of an outing your pitching staff has.
Hudson has looked strong thus far this year, winning his only two decisions in three outings. The game tonight starts at 7:10 and hopefully the Braves have long forgotten about their lack of production last night. I certainly haven’t, but that’s besides the point. I look for Hudson to go deep into the game to keep the ball out of the hands of our severely depleted bullpen.
Can the Braves please get some semblance of an offense going tonight? I sure hope so.

And welcome to the game thread, friends. What do you see happening tonight?
Can Hudson stop the bleeding?
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
So I’m missing the start of the game for the first time this season for a meeting. Hopefully I’ll be home to help cover the second half of the game.
Hudson needs to look strong tonight, but more importantly, the offense needs to get it in gear.

Looks like they have the alternate road jerseys on - I thought those were just Sunday road jerseys? Guess not.

Injury updates:
- Glavine is feeling good on the hammy and is throwing hard off the mound. Good news to hear
- Hampton threw off a mound for the first time today, and he felt good. No telling when he’ll next injure himself. Anyone want to start a pool?
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
And we’re underway. Kelly swings on the second pitch and pops it up to shallow left field. I wish he’d be more patient.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Escobar battles in the count before grounding out to short.
Chipper grounds slowly up the middle. Here comes Hudson.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Wow - great play by Chipper - snagged a harsh line drive from Ramirez.
Two more quick outs - flyouts to Diaz and Kotsay, and we’re headed to the second.
Hudson is looking good - his pitches are staying down. Would like to see the Marlins not hitting the ball as hard, though.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Teixeira is off to a slow start - and though he fought off a few foul balls and waited for a pitch he liked, the result is the same.
Francoeur hits a bloop to short center and we have a bit of a collision. Wind helped that one - Francoeur ended up at second.
McCann hits another short popup to short center, two out. We’ve got to get Francoeur on the board early.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Diaz grounds one inside the line at third, and despite a good fielding play by the third-baseman, a low throw to first gets away.
Francoeur scores, Diaz is on second now. 1-0 Braves.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Passed ball, Diaz to third. Now they’re going to intentionally walk Kotsay.
Huddy’s up - and he could hit in college.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Well Hudson got some good bat on the ball there, but got under it a bit and flew out to left. Anyhow, 1-0 Braves.
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Hey guys,
Hudson at least looked like a hitter there and worked the pitcher. We need to give our starter some support tonight.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Josh Willingham is at second after a nice double down the left field line. We’ve got to shut this down.
Jacobs grounds to first, Willingham to third.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Good to see us on the board.
Good evening Brandon.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Brandon - absolutely. We’ve got to get some support for Hudson tonight. Let’s hope he can get out of this trouble without giving up a run.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Tied 1-1 after an RBI single to the left side.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Another double down the right field line means the Marlins have two on second and third. Not good, friends.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
A walk means the bases are loaded with one out. Time to induce the grounder, Tim.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
This isn’t what I like to hear, I need to be in front of the TV.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Struck out the pitcher, now Hanley Ramirez is up with the bases loaded and two outs. This’ll be tough.
Hanley hit the ball hard his first time up - just right at Chipper.
On another note, I don’t get the pine tar on the helmet thing. Ramirez’s helmet is absolutely smothered in the stuff.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
A blooper into center knocks in two runs. 3-1, Marlins. Runners on first and third.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Wonderful. Just wonderful. We need some offense.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
A popup to Kelly Johnson in short right ends the half inning, but Hudson is working hard. After a 7 pitch first inning, he’s pitched 36 this inning. Too many pitches are just skirting the corners. This isn’t what we hoped to see tonight. The offense is going to have to come alive and put some runs on the board.
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
It’s unrealistic to depend on our aces every game, so its on our offense to step up. It could have been worse there.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
They’re showing some video of Hampton throwing from the mound today - no pieces fell off that I could see, but it was an upper body shot.
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Have yall heard about Glavine? Is he going to make his next start?
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
KJ strikes out.
Yunel swings first pitch and drops a single into right field. Almost got through the defense, but he’s on first.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Brandon, you’re right, we can’t rely on the aces.
Earlier they mentioned that Glavine was going to probably have a rehab start or two before he comes back, but we’ll know for sure soon.
Chipper singles to right, runners first and second. C’mon, Tex.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Mark Teixeira grounds into a 6-4-3 double play. Nothing doing for the Braves that half-inning.
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Do yall think Bobby needs to rework the batting order until Tex gets going?
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I don’t, Brandon. He’ll start soon, we know that it’ll come. Who else would you hit cleanup? We have to let him settle into his spot and get comfortable. I think Tex is best in the four hole. Nobody’s gonna be dumb enough to pitch around Chipper to get to Teixeira right now, they know he’s due.
Popup to Yunel for the first out.
Long fly to Francoeur for the second out. Lots of fly balls tonight.
Massive line drive home run for Mike Jacobs. He hit that ball hard. 4-1, Marlins.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Another single given up to left.
McCann is out to talk it over with Hudson and McDowell. We’re gonna need some relief pitching this year with this many pitches so far. Jorge Campillo is up and throwing out in the ‘pen.
Glavine should pitch Saturday, it seems.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
We’re out of the inning, but it’s 4-1.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Francoeur grounds to the pitcher after working the count.
McCann flies to left.
Diaz flies to short right. Short half inning, no good.
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I guess I would probably try McCann - Francouer - Texiera for now, but I do see were your coming from. I just hope he starts coming around sooner than later. We just need better hitting from Tex back period!
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I agree Colin. It’s a matter of time before Tex settles in for the season and his bat lights up. Moving the order around would show a lack of confidence in his power.
Tough night for Huddy.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Hudson is done after three, Campillo is in.
Campillo gets out of the inning quickly. Looking good.
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
This Campillo guy is amazing so far!
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I am loving everything about Campillo. The rest of the bullpin needs to follow his example.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I’m out for a bit, Jonathan will jump by when he gets back from his meeting. Enjoy the game, here’s hoping we can get something going.
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Two-run HR for Yunel, 4-3 ballgame - down by one now.
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I must have missed it, did they take hudson out because of his work or did he get hurt?
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I’m lovin Escy’s power so far this year!!!
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Hudson isn’t hurt. He had a long chat with Bobby after that inning and that was the end of the night for him.
By Smitty on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Colin, can you jump on braveblast “chat”?
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Ok, thanks Susan

Good inning by Campillo. We need to hold ‘em!
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Alright guys, I’m almost done with my meeting so I’ll be on for updates soon. Just a couple more things to take care of.
Teixeira on first in the top of the 6th with one out. BMac at the plate.
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Alright, this is looking hopeful with 2 runners on and 1 out.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Top 6th, cont:
- McCann walks, runners at first and second. 1 out.
Hendrickson’s night is done.
Miller in to pitch.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Top 6th, cont:
- Diaz grounds into a 6-4-3 double play, inning over.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Sure looked that way, Susan. We’re losing too many runners to DPs this season.
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Diaz is usually much more patient. I am very frustrated with all of our DPs to end the inning.
Glad you are back Jonathan but Colin did a great job while you were out.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Yes, but noone holds a flame to my game commentary…haha. I’m just glad there are some people around the site tonight. Watching the slaughter alone last night was a bit depressing.
1-2-3 in the bottom of the 6th for Campillo. I’m liking this guy.
By Brandon on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I’m guessing they will pinch-hit for Campillo this inning. He has done amazing! I wonder if he could be used as a starter.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Top 7th:
- Kotsay strikes out swinging. 1 down.
- Gotay pinch hitting for Campillo. Gotay singles into right.
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I was watching the “slaughter” too but my internet was out :o(
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
My internet was a little flaky too but not til after the game.
2-run home run for Ramirez. 6-3 Marlins. Tough start for Jeff Bennett.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Top 8th:
- Mark Teixeira walks to lead off the inning. At least he’s been on base twice tonight.
- Jeff Francoeur with a double off the wall. Just missed getting that one out. Runners on 2nd and 3rd.
Here’s the best chance we’ve had of the night.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
McCann grounds out to first. Teixeira scores, Francoeur to third. 1 out.
6-4 Marlins.
C’mon guys. Tying run at the plate. Sac fly brings it within one even. But I’d much prefer a hit.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Diaz reaches on a swinging bunt that’s misplayed by Pinto. Francoeur scores. Diaz at first.
6-5 Marlins. Still 1 out.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Kotsay grounds into a 4-6-3 to end the inning.
6-5 Marlins into the bottom of the 8th.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
So yet another double play to dash our hopes.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Blaine Boyer in to pitch in the 8th for the Braves.
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
those double plays are killing us.
I’m still hopeful. We’ve come back in to this game and I think we still have a chance.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Boyer gets the Marlins 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 8th. That’s what we need to see from our bullpen.
One run behind heading to the 9th with 9-1-2 up. We need some clutch offense.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Blanco strikes out. 1 out.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Kelly Johnson strikes out. 2 out.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
So Yunel is our last hope. A two home run night for him sounds good right now.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Yunel smokes a grounder down the right field line. Wes Helms stops it and steps on the base. 3 out.
Another one-run loss. Is anyone getting demoralized yet?
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
again….I can’t believe it.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
This seems to be happening way too often this season. I’d just like to see a one-run victory for us.
Or any victory honestly.
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Seriously. One run? It’s like an invisible ceiling that we can’t break. It’s always that ONE run we can’t get. I blame it on giving up too many runs in the begining and then not being able to come back and make up for it.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I’ll agree with that. It comes down to giving up early runs. Not capitalizing on scoring opportunities throughout the game. Giving up unneeded runs. And the lack of clutch offense.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I’m all about Campillo right now though. 3 hitless innings tonight. Great to see!
By Colin on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I got back just in time to see the final out. I’m not sure what to think at this point. Have we won a one-run game yet??
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Nope. 0-7 in one-run decisions.
By Susan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
I’m ready to see some consistancy and confidence in our players. Let’s put this miserable start to the season under our belt and get back in to the game.
By Jonathan on Apr 16, 2008 | Reply
Hopefully they can break out of it when they head back to Atlanta this weekend. I’m looking to watch some wins!
