Francoeur’s Foot Woes

Written by Jonathan on April 24, 2008 – 11:01 am

It’s been visibly noticeable that Jeff Francoeur hasn’t had the usual speed and mobility in right field the last couple of games, letting balls drop that would normally be no problem for him to take care of.  Problems became much more apparent in Tuesday night’s game against the Nationals when Jeff pulled up while jogging back to first on a foul ball.  Bobby Cox came out to talk to him about it and Frenchie stayed in for the rest of the game.

Word is that, since the start of Spring Training, Jeff has had some on-and-off pain on the top of his right foot where the foot meets the ankle.  Frenchie is stubborn however and doesn’t want to let this affect his playing time.  Jeff has the longest active consecutive game streak in the National League at 347 as of last night’s game (he’s second in MLB to Grady Sizemore who is at 378), but this isn’t as important as seeing him healthy down the stretch and into future seasons.

There’s no current indication as to the cause of the pain, but Jeff is speculating that it is remnant issues from the broken leg he suffered in high school playing football.  We’ll look to see any further updates on the issue and hope that Jeff can stay healthy for the remainder of the season.

That explains it then–I had wondered why Kotsay had run to try and catch a ball on Tuesday night that really was in Jeff’s area (of course Kotsay couldn’t get it) and why he didn’t run up and get 2 others too. At least now I know he wasn’t slacking off. BUT, those hits eventually scored runs if I remember correctly–I guess they think his bat is too important to take him out of the line-up.

This explains so much. I have been very frustrated with his fielding lately but now I see why. Poor Jeffrey. I think his health is more important than his game streak.

Now people can stop saying that I’m just making excuses for him not catching balls. He’s hurting and hopefully they can get him fixed up but still in the game.

    cortisone shots suck.

yeah, jonathan called it when he pulled up hard the other night running back to first. and then we noticed the decline in his francoeur-ness.

    good game tonight, though.

Wow, I totally noticed his diminished defense, but did not know about the pain in is foot.

Glad to know he isn’t just being a slacker.

Can anyone tell me why Chris Resop is not
getting playing time and he is still on the
braves roster? Roster spots are too valuable
to have a player not pulling his weight still
on the team. I say play him or release him.
Because this player has no options left is no
reason to keep him around and not play him.
