Smoltz Tries To Snag Series Win

Written by Jonathan on April 27, 2008 – 12:43 pm

After falling in another one-run loss yesterday to the Mets (12-11), the Braves (12-12) look to John Smoltz (3-1, 0.78) to capture the series win against the division rivals.  Smoltz is hot right now, striking out a total of 20 in his last two outings combined.   He also leads all of MLB with an average of 7.75 strikeouts per game. With the 3000K milestone behind him now, he can just focus on getting the wins.

The Braves are still lacking the offensive and defensive prowess of Yunel Escobar and Chipper Jones today, which was visibly a problem in yesterday’s game.  The lineup today as a result is a little strange, with Francouer moving up into the three-spot ahead of Teixeira.  We’ll see how this pans out compared to yesterday’s offense, which struggled to put runs together.

A win today would move the Braves to 4-1 against the Mets this season and back above .500 (and the Mets in the division standings).  Of all pitchers to have on the mound, Smoltz is the one you want to have to close out a rivalry series.  The Mets are bringing Nelson Figueroa(1-1, 4.05) to face Smoltz.  Figueroa has struggled at times this season, giving up 9 earned runs in 20 innings of work.

not all the time but when we were down in florida for spring training the four of us played catch on the beach for a few hours. i play softball every friday night for my company’s team, and i sucked it up this friday because i was pissed that i got stuck in right field. normally i play left/center, but the team we played had a bunch of guys who would place the ball in right field. they did that in the beginning, but after they figured out that i could actually catch and actually throw, they started placing the ball on the left side of the field, so i pretty much just stood out there while all the hits went to the other side. so then when i finally got one hit to me and entirely wasn’t paying attention, i made a very stupid error and am still not over it. so i insist on practicing now.

    - McCann singles.

    - Prado hits into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. 3 out.

Once again, potential destroyed by a double play. I’m frustrated by the Braves right now.

it’s hard to get a full-fledged pickup game, but even if it’s just a few of us throwing around or hitting at each other, that’s a good start.

personally i’d love to play on multiple teams and play all the time. i’m not great, but i have the basics down.

i miss it too. I’ve been wanting to try out for the Atlanta men’s adult baseball league for awhile…. but apparently I have to go get my knee checked out first, or at least that’s what Rue keeps telling me.

I think the Braves are just in denial about Moylan. I say if he needs the surgery, get to work and let him recover. Tommy John is a full year recovery at a minimum.

About time someone gets a hit off of Wagner! Good work Matty.

    - Lillibridge onto the track in left. 1 out.
    - Matt Diaz singles.
    - Johnson flies out to left. 2 out.
    - Blanco strikes out looking. 3 out.

Well………I got nothing. I say 10 minutes until my phone rings for me to get harassed about this game.

I guess I could sit here and come up with a new poll question….that one has been up for awhile.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

  139. By Jonathan on Apr 27, 2008 | Reply

I didn’t watch any of the draft. Nothing could be better than the look on Brady Quinn’s face in the 2007 draft as he fell farther and farther down the list though.

nice HR by delgado. granted, that's not what i wanted to see.

  145. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

I'd like to see us keep him as well, I just wonder if our front office is willing to lay out for an extended, high-dollar contract. Tex's next contract is going to be his money-maker, and we all know how Boras is when it comes to negotiating those. I mean, hell, the man got $18 mil a season for Andruw.

  146. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

    Top 4th:
    - Tex with a leadoff double for the Braves. About time.
    - McCann flies out to left. 1 out.
    - Kotsay strikes out looking. 2 out.
    - Prado flies out to left. 3 out.

Leadoff double and we can't even advance the runner. Pathetic.

i'm going to have to use that for my scorecard. i'm slacking. i seriously can't believe colin was so obsessed with brent lillibridge. wtf.

    Top 5th:
    - Lillibridge grounds out to short. 1 out.
    - Gotay in to hit for Smoltz and walks.
    - KJ grounds out to first. Gotay to second. 2 out.
    - Blanco lines to short. 3 out.

Smoltz done after 4. That's a combined 7 innings by our 1-2 starters this time around the rotation. We have 0 RISP hits today. 0-6.

  149. By Rue on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

we have to get healthy. we're a great team, but not with 2/3 of it injured.

  150. By Rue on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

well this is probably buddy's last out.

  151. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Hey Susan. Definitely nothing exciting to report so far in the game. Smoltz left after 4 innings showing some obvious discomfort in his shoulder again. He gave up two homers as well.

Outside of that, our offense is flat.

    How're you today?

  152. By Susan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Poor Smoltzy. That's tough to hear. Looks like Carlyle did a pretty good job last inning. I'm ready to see our offense come to life and get back in this game.

    Good base running Frenchy!

Yeah, I saw that Travis. Glavine is still on track to be reactivated this week. I'm a bit hesitant about the Braves still trying to bring Soriano back with him hurting still. I'm trying to throw together an injury update, but there are just so many.

6-3 Mets. Delgado's second homer of the day.

not all the time but when we were down in florida for spring training the four of us played catch on the beach for a few hours. i play softball every friday night for my company's team, and i sucked it up this friday because i was pissed that i got stuck in right field. normally i play left/center, but the team we played had a bunch of guys who would place the ball in right field. they did that in the beginning, but after they figured out that i could actually catch and actually throw, they started placing the ball on the left side of the field, so i pretty much just stood out there while all the hits went to the other side. so then when i finally got one hit to me and entirely wasn't paying attention, i made a very stupid error and am still not over it. so i insist on practicing now.

    Top 2nd:

    - McCann singles.
    - Kotsay singles to center. McCann to second.
    - Prado hits into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. 3 out.

Once again, potential destroyed by a double play. I'm frustrated by the Braves right now.

  196. By Rue on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

it's hard to get a full-fledged pickup game, but even if it's just a few of us throwing around or hitting at each other, that's a good start.

personally i'd love to play on multiple teams and play all the time. i'm not great, but i have the basics down.

  197. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

i miss it too. I've been wanting to try out for the Atlanta men's adult baseball league for awhile…. but apparently I have to go get my knee checked out first, or at least that's what Rue keeps telling me.

Well when you and your truck find your way here, we'll have Braves tickets for you.

both jonathan and charles are really good at basebally. charles is actually friends with ryan zimmerman (well, they share the same best friend and know each other through him) and played with him for a lot of years, and jonathan wants to join the Atlanta Men's Baseball League.

  199. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

i hear ya, Travis. My last year of college I worked two jobs off and on and took a pretty hefty course load. And then I got out of school and started working 80 hours a week. I've tried to cut that back recently however.
