A True Doubleheader…

Written by Jonathan on May 12, 2008 – 12:28 pm

So we have a real doubleheader against the Pirates today.  Not a day/night one, but a true one game after another doubleheader.  You don’t see that too often any more, but I’m glad.  The real question is . . . will we get the games in today.  I’m pretty busy today but the last time I looked in on the weather for Pittsburgh, it wasn’t looking too favorable.  We’ll see if it holds out so we can get some of these games in.  I’ll do my best to keep up with the games today but no guarantees.

Jurrjens will be pitching the first game for the Braves while Tim Hudson will make his regularly scheduled start in the second game.  We have another doubleheader in a couple weeks against the Mets; let’s try and start a good streak on those today.

I’ll do my best to keep up with the first game via slingbox and MLB gameday….it’s a good break from the workday.

The Braves are rocking the pink bats for game 1 here.

    Game 1, Top 1st:
    - Infante grounds out to short. 1 out.
    - Escobar grounds out to third. 2 out.
    - Chipper doubles to right.
    - Teixeira flies out to right. 3 out.

Not much for the Braves there. Good to see Chipper on the board early.

    Game 1, Bottom 1st:
    - Sanchez walks to lead off the inning.
    - McLouth grounds into the 4-6-3 double play. 2 out.
    - Bay strikes out on the changeup. 3 out.

Nice to be the one turning the double plays for once instead of hitting into them. Hope Jurrjens can keep his hot streak of late going. 3-0 in his last 4 starts.

  6. By Jonathan on May 12, 2008 | Reply

    Game 1, Top 2nd:
    - Frenchie singles up the middle.
    - Diaz lines out to first. Frenchie doubled up at first. 2 out.
    - Miller walks.
    - Blanco reaches on an infield single to second. Miller to third on a throwing error to first.
    - Jurrjens strikes out swinging. 3 out.

That’s 10 double plays in our last 4 games. That’s horrific. 3 runners left on base already this game.

Wow, I didn’t realize the game started so early today….how’s it going so far?

  8. By Jonathan on May 12, 2008 | Reply

yeah, 12:35 start on the first one and then the second one starts right after this one ends.

Jurrjens is struggling to find control today. Throwing a lot of balls. Might have something to do with it being in the low 40s in Pittsburgh.

0-0 Bottom of the 2nd right now.

  9. By Jonathan on May 12, 2008 | Reply

    Game 1, Bottom 2nd:
    - Doumit singles to center.
    - Michaels grounds into the double play. 2 out.
    - LaRoche walks.
    - Bautista strikes out looking. 3 out.

Another bailout by the double play. Better than nothing though. 2 Ks on the day for Jurrjens so far.

    - Escobar grounds out to third. 2 out.

    There’s #4 left on base.

What are we going to do about all our LOBs? We seem to either leave our runners stranded or hit in to a double play.

Where is KJ? Why hasn’t he been playing lately? I don’t have anything against Infante but I miss Kelly.

I’m avoiding work by keeping up with the game :)

    And yourself?

  14. By Jonathan on May 12, 2008 | Reply

I don’t know what they’re going to do to fix it, but they need to do something quick. We need that clutch hitting!

KJ’s splitting time with Infante for now to get rested up. He’s still being bothered off and on by injuries a little bit. At least Omar can hold down the position pretty well.

I’m buried in work and just listening to the game via my slingbox…..it’s a pretty crazy day to say the least, but I figured I have to keep the game thread going, other people need to escape from work too :) Hopefully I’ll get to go home to catch some of the second game but I’ll be on here as much as I can.

Baseball is infinitely better than work, that’s for sure. I’m sure you agree.

You put it so nicely by saying that KJ is splitting time with Infante. It seems to me that Infante has taken over. But then again, I am bias. I know there was a lot of criticism regarding the leadoff spot. I feel like Kelly’s confidence has been shaken.

Baseball is definitely better than work – along with many other things.

Is the forecast looking any better for the 2nd game?

    Game 1, Bottom 4th:

Another 1-2-3 for Jurrjens. Work’s busy, I’ll keep updates coming as I can.

Chipper is solid today. I want to see more of that from our guys. I hope Tex is okay. I don’t want to hear anything about him on the DL.

    2 more LOB…..seriously….

    - Greg Norton walks. Runners on first and second.
    - Francoeur grounds into a force out at second. 3 out.

    Just keep leaving them on…..

    2-0 Pirates.

So we lost to the Pirates 5-0. Here’re my questions.

How do you not score on 8 hits and 4 errors by the opposition? How do you leave 15 runners on base? 8 of them in scoring position.

    Grr . . . nevermind…..Game 2, coming up.

I think that’s the kicker right there. We’re not thinking….we’re not playing fundamentals when we need to be. No clutch offense and sometimes we just need to play small ball. We need to get runners aboard with less than two outs and then learn how to just hit singles and get the ball into the outfield with runners in scoring position. I think that’s a big key right now.
