Ryan Church, You Deserved That

Written by Colin on May 21, 2008 – 11:15 am

Dear Ryan Church,

When you’re trying to break up a double play, I have some advice for you: Don’t use your head.

I know you were wearing a helmet and all, but c’mon. Slide a little sooner. It’s not the first time you’ve run from first base to second base. It’s 90 feet. And you know that Yunel Escobar is going to be coming across the bag from the shortstop position towards first base. It’s not like this is new information. It’s the exact same on every single 1-6-3 or 4-6-3 double play you have tried to break up.

This isn’t your first concussion of the year, either. Do you just like going to the hospital? You should know by now you have a penchant for running into people – that should have probably played into your decision of when to slide. Multiple concussions are bad, Ryan, they’re not good for you at all. And it’s not good when your manager defines you as “pretty glazed” – that’s a description that should be saved for doughnuts.

So don’t use your head next time, Ryan. When you use your head you’re just asking for another trip to the hospital. Ryan Church, you deserved that.

I don’t really see anything wrong with the slide….he was just trying to keep his team in the game. Sure, it didn’t end well this time, but you never know what little thing is going to turn the tide in a game.

I hope they’re both alright. I doubt we’ll see either of them in action today.

I hate to see Escobar get a bump on his knee, but im sure he will be fine. Church I don’t care about. We should be talking about that wonderful performance by Campillo!!!! Glavine was great, but Campillo was so unexpected for me. I think he has to be given another start and a chance for the position if he can continue to pitch like that. We should be hearing Gonzalez knocking on the door soon to rejoin the club. He pitched well recently and is expected to leave extended spring training for Richmond soon. That being said and the bullpen doing well right now… Here is a great opportunity for you Jorge.

I agree that it’s a great opportunity for Jorge, but I don’t know if we can pull him out of the pen until we get Soriano and Gonzalez back. Great performance though and I’d love to see him as a starter.

I think the slide was just a bit of a dumbass play on Church’s part. I don’t think he was trying to get a concussion or hit Yunel with his head – it just didn’t seem like heads-up baseball by Church.

Just poking a little fun for the boo-boo.

Campillo was electric. We’ve got to pull him from the bullpen and make him the 5th starter. Bennett can hold down the long relief role assuming Bobby doesn’t use him every day for one inning.

I just re-watched it. That wasn’t a slide. It looks like he forgot to slide until Escobar was already past the bag, and he just kind of ducked.

He was just trying to break up the play and be as in-the-way as possible . . . and then realized he was about to get rocked.

    Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

It’s called a take out slide. He got up too early, and BAM! Come on guys, I thought you were better than that.

Andrew – I edited your comment to shorten the ‘ooooo’s so it would stop messing with the page divs. ;)

I’m with you on that one however, Andrew. Like I said, I don’t think he did anything wrong. Just trying to keep the game alive and playing hard. It was just an unfortunate incident, but that happens.

C’mon Andrew, grow a pair. It’s just a bit of good fun aimed at Church. Look at the picture – Escobar couldn’t possibly have jumped any higher.

And there isn’t anything wrong with a bit of fun – I said above Church wasn’t trying to do anything wrong, but when you go into a slide like that you’ve got it coming to you.

The guy was just playing hard, let’s give him a break. He’s the ONLY guy on that team that does lay it out there unlike all of the other high priced Divas. the Mets are a bunch of bench warmers with a couple of guys that will bust it, and while I have no problem kicking the guys that don’t play the game the way they should, Church does and I hope he gets better.

Church definitely deserved what he got. I think he should be suspended for the play. There is a reason you are required to slide or to veer out of the base line. He made no attempt to slide. It was simply an attempt to take out Escobar…same as he attempted earlier in the game when he did a pop-up slide and threw his shoulder into Escobar on a double play.

Actually, I probably would have done the same thing as church; be distruptive and break up a game-ending double play.

But if I were as goofy and clumsey as he was, then I would deserve to get bonked on the head.

It’s unfortunate, but Escobar was totally trying to jump over Church. Church might as well have tackled Escobar.

It happens. Especially when you are trying to interfere with the defense.

You know I watched the replay again this morning and I realized Church had just started his slide by the time we was nearing Escobar. It really wasn’t a safe slide. It wasn’t dirty, it was a breakup play, but it also wasn’t happenstance that he got drilled in the forehead.

I won’t go so far as Colin’s “egging you on” piece to say he “deserved it” but he definitely got what he was risking by sliding the way he did.

It’s like a collision at the plate (which I hate a lot of times, mostly because we always retain the casualties of those…ie. Estrada, Olson) you’re trying to break up the play, not destroy the guy, and you end up getting destroyed.
