Getting Past The Heartbreaker

Written by Jonathan on May 28, 2008 – 8:03 pm

I’m still not 100% cured from the loss last night.  And I don’t know if Jo-Jo Reyes is the solution to this problem, but either way, he’s taking the mound for us tonight against the Brewers.  The Braves need to do whatever it takes to get a win right now on the road.  The bats need to come alive and the pitching needs to hold.  I’m hoping for the best, but I don’t know if I can handle another game like last night.  Go Braves!

I am crossing my fingers and hoping to see some good baseball tonight. I need something to get this bitter taste out of my mouth.

I can get over how big Prince Fielder has gotten.

    Top 1st:
    - Escobar grounds out to short. 1 out.
    - Johnson strikes out swinging. 2 out.
    - Chipper walks.
    - Tex walks. Chipper to second.
    - McCann grounds out to second. 3 out.

Good to see the Braves batters working Suppan a little bit. That’s one thing we just didn’t do last night. Would’ve liked to get at least one out of that though.

Jo-Jo just makes me nervous as a cat. I hate seeing him on the mound.

  12. By Susan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Not a bad start to the game….but c’mon…we need to get some of those runners around to score.

Nervous as a cat. That actually made me laugh out loud.

here we go jo-jo i got my fingers crossed that he can keep his pitches in the strike zone

  15. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Infante definitely is better off as an infielder.

  16. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Hey Cameron, I think we all share that sentiment tonight.

  17. By Cameron on May 28, 2008 | Reply

nice play infante ……………hey that rhymes

    Bottom 1st:
    - Weeks grounds out to short. 1 out.
    - Cameron lines out to left. 2 out.
    - Braun walks.
    - Fielder strikes out swinging. 3 out.

Decent inning for Jo-Jo. We all can expect he’ll make a few mistakes though so we need to put some runs on the board. Good 0-2 pitch to Fielder.

Fielder is a freakin’ frackin’ frickin’ pillsbury dough boy man-child. His boxers must have thier own zip-code.

  28. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

    Top 2nd:
    - Francoeur grounds out to short. 1 out.
    - Blanco bunts safely for an infield single.
    - Infante hits to third. Hall can’t handle the ball and Infante reaches on the error. Blanco was going on the play. He’s at second.
    - Reyes bunts into a double play. 3 out.

    That hurts.

  29. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

It wasn’t a terrible bunt for Jo-Jo . . . just a great play to get the double play.

  30. By Smitty on May 28, 2008 | Reply

I mean, I bet if you pulled up Fielder’s jersey he’d be hiding a midget or two in there.

  31. By Cameron on May 28, 2008 | Reply

    Sorry. 80’s reference.

  33. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Yep, at least Jo-Jo got cleared in the inning. Hopefully the second time through the order is a little more productive.

  34. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Not so sure about that call….need to see a replay.

  35. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Alright, replay confirms the call. Good throwout for McCann

  36. By Smitty on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Wow! Textbook tag out at 2nd. Awesome job Bmac and KJ.

  37. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

    Bottom 2nd:
    - Hart bunts. McCann throws him out. 1 out.
    - Hall flares a broken bat single to center.
    - Hall thrown out stealing second. 2 out.
    - Hardy walks.
    - Kendall strikes out looking. 3 out.

Still too many walks for Jo-Jo but BMac helped bail him out.

  38. By Smitty on May 28, 2008 | Reply

I actually saw the Red play the Brewers at that park last year. Absolutely beautiful park there in the Braves former home.

  39. By Susan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Great play by Mac and KJ. Replay confirms it.

  40. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Speaking of the Reds, they’re beating up on the Pirates 7-1 in the 5th right now. I love the new stadium in Pittsburgh, though the last time I was at a game there, it was snowing.

  41. By Smitty on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Hope that counts as a hit rather than an error.

  42. By Smitty on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Please, Tex. No hittie into double play, ok?

  43. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Well there’s two outs, so he’s going to have to try pretty hard to do so.

It’s definitely a single. Good 1.000 OBP for Chipper so far tonight.

  44. By Smitty on May 28, 2008 | Reply

    Good base-running, Chip.

  45. By Susan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

4 outs to end the inning? ;)

  46. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Not sure what happened with Braun there, I figured he had plenty of time to get to that one.

Let’s hope McCann can do something with two on this time.

  47. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

If any team is capable of that, Susan, it’s the Braves on the road this season.

  48. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

    Top 3rd:
    - Escobar pops out in foul territory. 1 out.
    - Johnson strikes out looking. 2 out.
    - Chipper singles to second off of Weeks’s glove.
    - Tex singles to left. Chipper over to third.
    - McCann strikes out looking. 3 out.

We need to work on getting men on base with less than two outs. I feel like I’ve been talking about that all season. Need to convert on those, boys!

  49. By Smitty on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Yeah. i’m just accustomed to Tex hitting into a double-play, it was a Pavlovian response.

  50. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

    Bottom 3rd:
    - Suppan grounds out back to Reyes. 1 out.
    - Weeks singles to left.
    - Cameron strikes out swinging on the high fastball. 2 out.
    - Braun strikes out looking. 3 out.

No damage done by the single…good inning for Jo-Jo. He located some nice pitches throughout the inning. 4 Ks.

  51. By Susan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Are your cat-like nerves starting to calm down a bit Smitty?

  52. By Smitty on May 28, 2008 | Reply

You don’t have to worry about Jo-Jo until the 5th and 6th . . . that seems to be how he works…. well, except in that slaughtering by Arizona.

  54. By Smitty on May 28, 2008 | Reply

But we are only in the 4th. Jo-Jo has plenty of time yet to screw the pooch.

    - Escobar singles past short.
    - Johnson sac bunts Escobar over to second. 2 out.
    - Chipper walks intentionally.
    - Teixeira flies out to center. 3 out.

Well, that’s the third time we’ve left 2 on tonight. We need run support for Jo-Jo.

Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s not, but the guy has my respect for at least coming clean about taking the stuff in the first place.

I’ve been a fan of Reyes over the last two years cause I felt like he had the best chance of the patchwork tail end of the rotation to be a consistent big-league starter, but I hope he doesn’t do an on again-off again thing like he’s done so far for too long. He looked great tonight and needs to be able to reproduce this kind of an outing, especially the second and third times through the lineup. That said, I feel like McCann behind the plate gives Reyes a great chance to learn and get better at this level.

Yeah, I’d rather see the Marlins with the win. Anyone but the Mets, right?

  138. By Jonathan on May 28, 2008 | Reply

Yep, I agree. The Mets have runners on first and third with no outs in the bottom of the 12th right now though.

    2-run double, Mets win 7-6.

Speaking of the Marlins, is it that surprising that Oliver Perez couldn't keep a lead? He walked four guys in his six innings and allowed three homers…the Mets are a joke.

  148. By Akshay on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Yeah, but we still don't know what went on with Shafer, he hasn't spoken about it yet. Hasn't denied it or come clean, it's kind of in limbo right now.

  149. By Akshay on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Wow…Endy Chavez? seriously? doesn't that guy homer like once every year and a half?

  150. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

I'd rather see the Marlins win over the Mets. I feel like down the road, the Mets are a bigger challenge to us.

  151. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

    Bottom 7th:
    - Fielder strikes out looking. 1 out.
    - Hart lines out to right. 2 out.
    - Hall strikes out swinging. 3 out.

9 Ks for Jo-Jo and 14 retired in a row. Not sure what's going on with Jo-Jo, but I'll take it……soooo…..run support?

  152. By Susan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Great job so far Jo-Jo!! Now let's get some runs on the board and put this game in the books….

Who would've thought this would be a pitchers duel?

  154. By Susan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

The home plate umpire must have a hot date after the game. He's in a hurry to get the game over.

  155. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Good chance we'll have an ejection here shortly.

  156. By Akshay on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Wow…I can't believe the umpire pulled something off like that, absolutely horrible on the part of the umpire. I'm sorry, I know players shouldn't "slow down the game," but that was childish on the umpire's part.

  157. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

    Top 8th:
    - Johnson walks.
    - Chipper lines out to center. 1 out.
    - Teixeira strikes out looking. 2 out.
    - McCann strikes out swinging. 3 out.

    That's just disrespectful. The ump's acting like a 4-year-old.

Can't believe that ump did that. Totally un-called for.

    Bottom 8th:
    - Hardy walks.

Jo-Jo's done. Great night for Jo-Jo…he's charged with the runner this inning, but a great 7 inning, 2-hit outing for him.

  162. By Smitty on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

    Hat's off to you, Jo-Jo.

  163. By Akshay on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

I've been a fan of Reyes over the last two years cause I felt like he had the best chance of the patchwork tail end of the rotation to be a consistent big-league starter, but I hope he doesn't do an on again-off again thing like he's done so far for too long. He looked great tonight and needs to be able to reproduce this kind of an outing, especially the second and third times through the lineup. That said, I feel like McCann behind the plate gives Reyes a great chance to learn and get better at this level.

    Top 1st:
    - Escobar grounds out to short. 1 out.
    - Johnson strikes out swinging. 2 out.
    - Chipper walks.
    - Tex walks. Chipper to second.
    - McCann grounds out to second. 3 out.

Good to see the Braves batters working Suppan a little bit. That's one thing we just didn't do last night. Would've liked to get at least one out of that though.

  176. By Susan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Not a bad start to the game….but c'mon…we need to get some of those runners around to score.

    Bottom 1st:
    - Weeks grounds out to short. 1 out.
    - Cameron lines out to left. 2 out.
    - Braun walks.
    - Fielder strikes out swinging. 3 out.

Decent inning for Jo-Jo. We all can expect he'll make a few mistakes though so we need to put some runs on the board. Good 0-2 pitch to Fielder.

  182. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

    Top 2nd:
    - Francoeur grounds out to short. 1 out.
    - Blanco bunts safely for an infield single.
    - Infante hits to third. Hall can't handle the ball and Infante reaches on the error. Blanco was going on the play. He's at second.
    - Reyes bunts into a double play. 3 out.

    That hurts.

  183. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

It wasn't a terrible bunt for Jo-Jo . . . just a great play to get the double play.

  184. By Smitty on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

I mean, I bet if you pulled up Fielder's jersey he'd be hiding a midget or two in there.

Speaking of the Reds, they're beating up on the Pirates 7-1 in the 5th right now. I love the new stadium in Pittsburgh, though the last time I was at a game there, it was snowing.

  187. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Well there's two outs, so he's going to have to try pretty hard to do so.

It's definitely a single. Good 1.000 OBP for Chipper so far tonight.

  188. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Not sure what happened with Braun there, I figured he had plenty of time to get to that one.

Let's hope McCann can do something with two on this time.

  189. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

If any team is capable of that, Susan, it's the Braves on the road this season.

  190. By Jonathan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

    Top 3rd:
    - Escobar pops out in foul territory. 1 out.
    - Johnson strikes out looking. 2 out.
    - Chipper singles to second off of Weeks's glove.
    - Tex singles to left. Chipper over to third.
    - McCann strikes out looking. 3 out.

We need to work on getting men on base with less than two outs. I feel like I've been talking about that all season. Need to convert on those, boys!

  191. By Smitty on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

Yeah. i'm just accustomed to Tex hitting into a double-play, it was a Pavlovian response.

So far, Susan. Amazing what a quart of Nyquil(tm) will do for one's nerves.

You don't have to worry about Jo-Jo until the 5th and 6th . . . that seems to be how he works…. well, except in that slaughtering by Arizona.

Yeah. I rear-ended a midget. He was really upset. He came back to my car screaming and yelling.

He said, "I am NOT happy!"

I was confused. I said, "OK, which one are you?"

    Bottom 4th:
    - Fielder grounds out to Reyes. 1 out.
    - Hart grounds out to short. 2 out.
    - Hall strikes out looking. 3 out.

Good quick inning for Jo-Jo. That's 4 solid innings; time to hang on for the ride.

    Top 5th:
    - Reyes strikes out swinging. 1 out.
    - Escobar singles past short.
    - Johnson sac bunts Escobar over to second. 2 out.
    - Chipper walks intentionally.
    - Teixeira flies out to center. 3 out.

Well, that's the third time we've left 2 on tonight. We need run support for Jo-Jo.

In other news, a Rockies' minor leaguer was suspended 50 days for using a banned substance…but get this, he didn't go the Roger Clemens route, he came clean! Said he was prescribed the substance by a doctor in Mexico and didn't know it was banned. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but the guy has my respect for at least coming clean about taking the stuff in the first place.
