Why The Useless Stats?
Written by Colin on June 9, 2008 – 1:59 pmESPN is bad at this, but let me ask – why keep track of and then report useless stats? Here are some examples from yesterday’s SportsCenter:
- The Padres are the first team to win four games in a row by a 2-1 score.
- Johnny Damon is the 4th player to go 6-6 with a walk-off hit.
Who cares? No fan at any of those games is going to remember that day forever as seeing the Padres win their fourth 2-1 game in a row. This is getting out of hand. If you add enough qualifiers, you’re gonna be the first one to do it. Or the fourth, in Damon’s case. That’s not a line that’s going to go on the back of a baseball card or onto his resume.
If this keeps going, we’ll hear lines like the following:
“That makes him the first Cuban player to strike out three times, get caught stealing, and then sprain his ankle by falling down the dugout stairs in an afternoon ballgame.”
“And you just saw the first time a player has ever been tickled by an 8 year old after dropping a ball in foul territory because he fell over a wall.”
Let’s move away from the dumb useless stats and stop trying to find insignificant things to fill time with. I’m really not interested if the Padres win 6 games in a row with a score of 2-1. Doesn’t matter one bit.

Sure it matters! 3 of those games were against the Mets

So true. I like when the dudes running Braves Vision try to slice up the data in wacky ways to make Corky Miller look good. Like I’m going to say, “Holy crap, Corky Miller is batting .348 over the last three years on Tuesday day games that are the first half of a double header when the starting pitcher has an ERA of over 4. Let me rethink my whole opinion on the guy!”
