Gonzo Back Tuesday, Braves in Colorado
Written by Akshay on June 16, 2008 – 6:57 pmI’m sure many of you regulars have been wondering, “when will we actually get some solid good news?” Well after the Braves went the weekend giving up just eight runs in three games to one of the best teams in the majors, the Braves released a report Monday afternoon that another pitcher will be back to the Braves. Mike Gonzalez is set to rejoin the Braves in Texas in Tuesday after five appearances and six innings. Gonzo had a 1.50 ERA in those six innings as well as eight strikeouts and just one walk as well as a paltry .227 batting average against.
This is good news for the Braves (obviously), who seemed to have been slipping into the 2-18 stretch that plagued the team two years ago and the mediocre stretch of baseball they played from mid-May to late September last year, when they couldn’t win at home but torched everyone on the road.
After going two out of three for their first road series win since Washington in April, the Braves look to continue that success against Ubaldo Jiminez in Colorado, who’s only win came against the Braves back on April 8th when he went six innings allowing three runs. Jiminez has been highly inconsistent this season. Jiminez gave up no runs in seven innings against San Francisco on June 11th. But the last time he gave up zero in seven, he came right back to give up seven in four innings against the Phillies on May 27th.
In his career against the Braves, Jiminez has allowed 9 earned in 10.2 innings (7.59 ERA)
Few Notes from over the weekend:
Starting pitching was excellent:
Jojo Reyes, 8IP, W, 5 hits, 2 ER (1HR), 5 Ks, 2 BB
Charlie Morton: 6 IP, W, 5 hits, 3 ER, 4 Ks, 1BB
Jorge Campillo: 8 IP, CG, L, 2 ER (1 HR), 7 hits, 7 Ks, 1 BB
Manny Acosta (!!): 1 IP, ZERO ER
One more: Brandon Jones was recently called up and went 6 for 11 with his first major league home run. While I was among those questioning the switch from Anderson, Jones does have more power in his bat and can hopefully continue his excellent start.
Last point: Jair Jurrjens has pitched against the Rockies earlier this year, going seven innings allowing four runs in what would become a one run road loss.

Glad to see Gonzo back with the team, let’s hope he stays healthy and can contribute. It should take some load off of Manny “Overused” Acosta.

I was happy they let Acosta get some rest and just ran him out there in the blowout with a little less pressure on him. They need to be careful with him a little bit because he’s a guy that can give them excellent work in the future, the guy’s got great stuff
