Braves Beat Rox, Mets Fire Willie

Written by Colin on June 17, 2008 – 9:09 am

The Braves came out strong behind Jair Jurrjens and 7 2/3rds innings of one-run ball to beat the Rockies last night 7-1.  Chipper went 2-4 and started the scoring in the fifth with two RBIs.   Jurrjens’ extra five days of rest due to his sprained ankle seem to be paying immediate dividends – “I got my changeup back,” Jurrjens said.  The extra rest helped a blister heal.

Up in Queens, the Queens have fired longtime sucky manager Willie Randolph.  I don’t mean that in he was their manager for long, but that he has sucked for most of his time as Mets manager.

Jerry Manuel will replace him as interim head coach.  The Mets also cleaned out some of their other manager positions.  For more info, check out our buddy Andrew’s site over at TheRopolitans.

The Braves are finally up to 10 road wins, taking three out of the last four on the road.  Do you think they’ve turned a corner?  With the starting pitching looking great its last time around, will they continue their improvement?

And as Mike Hampton heads down to the Gulf Coast League for a couple rehab starts, will he ever pitch in Atlanta this season?

Mike Hampton should go manage for the Mets. That way I can hate on them both at the same time.

I’ve been blogging my little heart out since 6 a.m.

Chaos is reigning in Mets Land.

Gonzo will be back tomorrow and Cox said Soriano would try and pitch as soon as he gets off the DL. I don’t know about you guys but I’m starting to feel a vibe from these guys. Hampton’s on his latest rehab assignment, I’m not gonna say it outright, but you never know…

Anyone else feel that Omar Minaya is the man that should be held responsible for this seasons debacle (Last year falls on Randolph’s shoulders). I recently discovered that the Mets have traded away all of these players in his tenure:
Mike Jacobs, 1B (FLA – Showing 35+ HR potential)

Henry Owens, RH (FLA – Got some save opportunities until injuries set him back)

Matt Lindstrom, RH (FLA – Putting up great numbers in the pen)

Gaby Hernandez, RH (A Top Prospect in Florida System)

Jeff Keppinger, SS (CIN – Great contact ability, finally getting to play)

Xavier Nady, OF (PIT – Developing into a solid all around hitter)

Heath Bell, RH (SD – Setup man and future closer for the Padres)

Royce Ring, LH (ATL – Has struggled in 2008, but still has dominant reliever upside)

Brian Bannister, RH (KC – Cerebral pitcher and ML bloodline, 12-8 with a sub 4.00 ERA in ‘07)

That is a sure sign to me of a GM who does not know much about their farm system. Lindstrom, Bell and Keppinger were just throw aways. You can’t allow for that kind of mismanagement at this stage with player development being so important to the success of a team.
