Braves Sign Reliever Julian Tavarez

Written by Colin on July 8, 2008 – 5:14 pm

The Braves signed free-agent relief pitcher Julian Tavarez for the remainder of the season today.

Tavarez, who last pitched earlier this season in 16 appearances for two teams (Boston and Milwaukee), was 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA.  He’s made 750 career appearances with a 84-72 record, 22 saves, and a 4.46 ERA.  He’s no youngster, having debuted in the big leagues in 1993.  He actually played against the Braves in the 1995 World Series with Cleveland.

Tavarez is expected to be in Los Angeles in time for their game against the Dodgers at 10:10 Eastern tonight. Tavarez should help stabilize the pen who is just missing Jeff Bennett and Manny Acosta to injury, as well as Rafael Soriano, who continues to battle elbow issues.

What are your thoughts on the signing?  Is it of any significance?

Why??? This signing is of no value to the Braves other than an below average arm for the pen. I hope that’s all they were thinking……

It’s a major league proven guy that can play a similar role to what Buddy Carlyle is doing, plus he’ll give Acosta (when he gets off the DL) and Boyer a break.

After watching Buddy over his last two appearances I want to see more of him.

I don’t have a problem with this pick up since we need bullpen help and the guy has a been a workhorse his entire career.

It will be a little weird rooting for him as I’ve always disliked Taveras but the way our bullpen is beat up I don’t mind getting a little help.

Question is, how costly was this help?

I think this can’t hurt – another arm is never bad. With Acosta and Soriano out with injuries, we need the help.

It might actually not be costing us anything because he’s still earning from his contract with Boston. Just speculation though, I don’t know for sure.

Good insurance policy. He can start and relieve. Being a closet Red Sox fan, I have watched Tavarez quite a lot in the past. He features a splitter that when he locates it low, will get him a lot of ground balls. He struggles keeping it down consistently, which is why his ERA has balooned. Tavarez, will not save this bullpen, but he offers a spot starter and a mop-up guy. I am very happy to see them make this move, he is a very charismatic guy and should make the clubhouse a fun place for many players so long as he doesn’t think that he deserves a bigger part on the team.

The one thing we learned about Tavarez tonight….he and McCann need to work on signs still.

@JB, It is only costing the Braves the prorated amt for the minimum (approx $175,000) for the rest of the season. The Red Sox are paying a significant amount ($3.85 million) to play for the Braves.

I think that he is a rag arm and a waste of a roster spot. HECK, give me the $175,000 and I can be more effective than Tavarez.
