Braves Trade Rumor Updates
Written by Dan on July 24, 2008 – 12:42 pmAll indications are pointing towards the Braves taking a passive approach to the non-waiver trade deadline. Here are the Braves related notes I have been hearing as of this morning:
- Mike Gonzalez - The Braves closer has received interest from the Texas Rangers organization. The Rangers, in desperate need of bullpen help would be willing to trade an outfielder for Gonzalez. Outfielders could include David Murphy, Frank Catalanotto, Brandon Boggs or Marlon Byrd. While the Braves need an outfielder, it would be unwise to sell Gonzalez at this low of a price. He has a top-5 closer ceiling, it would be painful to see that production in another organization. Murphy and a top prospect might get the trade done however. For those who do not know David Murphy yet — he is a hard-nosed player that pounds the gaps hard. He will not be an all-star but has some above-average years in him. The rest of that crew would not be an attractive solution to our problems with outfield power.
- Mark Teixeira – The Braves have apparently started to seriously consider moving Teixeira. CBS Sportsline has a report up stating that the Braves have made a list that includes Boston, Los Angeles (AL), Tampa Bay, and Arizona of potential trading partners. These are four organizations with deep minor league systems that could really turn into a bidding war if two or more organizations get involved in this deal. I don’t see how Tampa Bay is interested in this because they have a long term commitment to Carlos Pena who has power and plays great defense, much like Teixeira. Putting one of the two at DH would be a detriment to those two players. A new rumor that was floating around is Robb Quinlan and Brandon Wood of the Angels to the Braves for Teixeira. That is a terrible offer if that is indeed the truth. Quinlan is a career bench player and Wood’s star has burned a lot dimmer in recent years since hitting 43 home runs in 2005 at High-A Ranco Cucamonga. Also, where does Wood fit on this team? He is a third-baseman/shortstop. There isn’t a place for him this season. Los Angeles would be a lot closer offering Casey Kotchmann and Juan Rivera.
- Tim Hudson – His name has been mentioned once, but it is highly doubtful that the Braves would be interested in moving their ace.
- Mark Kotsay – He has just this year left on his contract but has played well despite some injuries. I have doubts that they could get much for him – but you never know.
- Will Ohman – This is a name that may be mentioned more frequently over the next few days. While I have not heard of any specific deals in which Ohman might be involved in, he has put together a great season and is a lefty. I can’t imagine anything that might make him more attractive.
- Jeff Francoeur was mentioned by Braves.com today in trade rumors – though this may be shocking to some people, he’s not doing well at all. The Royals may be interested – their GM was formerly in the Braves organization.
It may be 4:01 on July 31st when the baseball world finally knows what the Braves intentions were for this trade season. Rumors will continue to flutter around and we may not know what’s going on until it happens.

Kansas City… where Braves careers go to die.
I'm ok with seeing Tex in any uniform that doesn't have Yankee pinstripes or Blue and Orange on it. Maybe we can all breath a collective sigh of relief once the breakup is finally over with.
The rumor I heard…
Mike Hampton to Beijing for the entire Swedish women's gymnastics team.
No.. that's just wishful thinking on my part.

That's a great trade for Hampton. I offer my house for a place to hold them all….at least until we can find a larger place for us all to live.

I can't see the Braves moving Hudson. He's the only real pillar we have in the rotation right now. We have some promising young guys, but I still feel like we need to pick up another veteran.
I'd like to keep Gonzo around as well, as much as it bothers me to watch him pitch from the windup.
Tex, I've talked about it enough….still don't know.
Kotsay, I think we should see if we can get another year out of him until our prospects are ready, however, not at his current salary. I'm not sure what the organization's plan for Schafer is right now, but I still expect that we'll see him in Atlanta by the end of the next year.
Ohman, Francoeur…..move 'em, I could care less.

I definitely agree with you on the pitching situation, Matt. It may take a few years to rebuild, but it's worth it at this point.

Wow Francoeur has been the most clutch player on this team the previous three seasons, he has one bad season and everyone wants to get rid of him like he's trash, THE GUY'S 24 AND HASN'T EVEN ENTERED HIS PRIME! The chances the Braves trade Francoeur are little to none. The only way they trade Francoeur are if they get a guy like Tim Lincecum or someone of that caliber.

Now that Chipper might miss sometime I can see the Braves dealing Tex to the DBacks. I think we'll see Francouer in a Braves uniform on the 1st of August as much as he may hurt us. Ohman should be dealt if the Braves can get anything good for him. Kotsay will stay and so will Mike. The time to rebuild is now.

I hope you didn't find that here: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/notebook?page=bbtn,...because I doubt the D'backs would make enough of an offer for the Braves to move him. Either Chris Young or Conner Jackson would be the only two (or maybe a pitcher like Micah Owings) that the Braves would even think about moving Tex for and Young just signed a long term deal and Conner Jackson's probably not too far behind. Steve Phillips is a dumb nut, he makes up these possible locations for players to go without thinking about both sides of the deal, that's why he's not a general manager anymore. See: Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano trade.

I don't think we SHOULD get rid of Francoeur – I was just reporting it. I think the guy needs more time to develop as a disciplined player and can be a good solid everyday player.
That said, we do have lots of outfield talent in the minors… no way to tell who develops into a superstar, but Francoeur isn't an absolutely vital part of the team. It's not like we're talking about trading Chipper.

Jim Duquette executed the Zambrano trade for the Mets

My mistake, kind of tells you how bad the Mets' front office situation was back then that they would let an interim GM make a huge decision like that. Although Phillips did make several poor decisions in my defense and obviously did not think about the Arizona-Mark Teixeira fit without thinking of a possible player they would trade to us. He just says stuff without substance.

I still think with the right coaching and the right amount of time investment, that Francoeur could turn into the Braves face of the future. He just needs to take the time to develop and not get frustrated at the decisions made by the organization when they're in his best interest.

Francoeur needs a change of scenery in the worst way. I say deal him to Baltimore for some of their young pieces. They might as well keep Teixeria if that is all they are being offered. Once he leaves via free agency at least they will pick up a high draft pick.
How about next year the Braves don't rely on so many old guys in the pitching staff and start to develop some young guys like they did in the 90's?

i think that the braves need to get a new batting coach.more than one batter have left the braves and upped their batting averages.
