The Mike Hampton Injury Pool
Written by Colin on July 26, 2008 – 7:20 amMike Hampton is slated to start today going to injure himself today in what is no longer extraordinary fashion anymore. The only question is – how?
Will he:
- Restrain his hamstring?
- Restrain his pectoral?
- Rip a muscle in his arm reacting to warm bird poop hitting the back of his neck?
- Strain a muscle in his back?
- Fall down the stairs?
- Brush his teeth too aggressively?
- Hurt himself tying a cleat?
- Slip in the shower?
Or will he invent new ways to get hurt? And when will he hurt himself? Pregame? Mid first inning? First pitch?
Place your bets now. How do YOU think Mike Hampton will find a way to injure himself today?

In case you haven't seen yet, I found out who Mike Hampton's backup… just in case.

I think he will break a nail on the rausen bag!!!!!This will require months of rehab
By josh on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
In fact I dont even know if its a good idea that he warms up before the game. Does anybody know if hes made it to the park safely yet? Do we know we he had for breakfast? Food poisoning is very dangerous!!!

I'm with you, Josh – we need minute by minute updates to make sure the guy doesn't choke on his lunch.

I hope the phillies are nice enough to stock the visiting locker room with decent toilet paper. I would hate to see what happens if hampton wipes wrong!! I know so wrong,so wrong . LOL Go Braves

What's a "rausen" bag?
By david on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
i think hampton goes a good 5-6 innings then watches hamels do his thing.
shakes hamels hand at the end of the game, who then crushes every bone in his hand.
hampton will never pitch again

a rosin bag JB, come on now

Haha, awesome JB . . . just awesome. I hope they have Carlyle warming up with him.

2 pitches in and he's still standing . . . weird
By josh on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
oops
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
And a single to the first batter he's faced…..oh well.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I dunno about you guys, but his pitches seem severely flat. I dunno if he's just throwing fastballs, but it does not even look like there's any movement on those.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I really wish the commentators would stop saying the word "injury," I get nervous whenever I hear that word in the context of Mike Hampton.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Wow, McCann, the first catcher to throw out Rollins in 39 tries, is there any doubt he's the best catcher in the NL?
By josh on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
holy crap!!! way to go mccan
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I'm not going to complain about that at this point . . . less strain on the arm is fine with me right now. I hold my breath every pitch.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I dunno what it is about Fox, but I don't think there's a single pair of commentators on this channel that could hold a candle to the guys that call the games for the Braves.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
By the way, in case you guys didn't hear, Charlie Morton was sent down to clear a spot for Hampton on active roster. I think that was a good move, as much as I love Morton's work here, he needs to get some more experience on a minor league level. this is, after all, the first year he's been even in triple A.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I don't think there's any doubt that we'll see Morton back in Atlanta soon…..he's got great potential. Just needs some more work.
By JB333 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Who had pitch a scoreless first?
By josh on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
lets see here 15 million / 1 inning of work= ?
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Absolutely, he's got good enough stuff to be a 2nd or 3rd starter for us in the future, a guy that could win anywhere between 14 and 17 games a year.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Burrell is 4 for 30 with 10 Ks against Hampton in his career.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Not this time . . . barely fair over the bag though.
By josh on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
is hampton on a pitch count or are we taking what we can get at this point?
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I like the future of our pitching staff with guys like Morton and Jurrjens.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
No mention of a pitch count in any articles I've seen. I think it's going to be a lot about how comfortable Bobby is.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Both McDowell and Cox have said that Hampton will pitch as long as he feels well enough to and is not on a pitch count…you know, as long as he's pitching well. Hopefully he can get out of this bases loaded jam.
By josh on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
damn it
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Let's hope this isn't one of those games for the Braves where we can't seem to buy a hit with Hampton's $15 million salary.
By josh on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
ok ,lets get some runs back
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
And Reyes and Campillo, Camp's 29, but he won't be arbitration eligible for another two seasons.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Please don't hurt yourself swinging the bat Mike Hampton, please.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Wow, it's been so long since Hampton has hit that I forgot he hits righty and throws lefty.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I really think they should sign Omar Infante for the future. He's one of the best utility guys we've had in YEARS.
By bravee12 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
sweet. nice hit TEX
By bravee12 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
hell yea!!!
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply

By jb on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
this game is what Ive been waiting for all year.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Seems a lot more like the Braves team I expect now . . . not really sure what got into the offense there for a bit.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
He's been stellar in place of Chipper and filling in where needed all year. I'm in complete agreement.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Don't forget, he was also a great hitting pitcher before all of the injuries.
By Susan on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
What a game! I'm on the edge of my seat….
I just wish these commentators would fall of the planet….
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Not thrilled to see the Braves down 10-9. :/
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
10-9 smarty…
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Well with Reyes losing his last 5 outings . . . i'm still not too high on him.
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Tough loss….. tough loss. But at least Hampton had a decent start where he didn't die.
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Yeah, sweet typo there. The 9 is next to the 0, apparently.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I don't really think that 6 ERs in 4 IP is really much of a decent start. But at least he didn't hurt himself. We'll see how he feels tomorrow.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
well, he's better than what Tom Glavine was in his first two years. I think year three will be the make or break. Control of the fastball will obviously be critical, so we'll see if they want him to go down and fix his mechanics or what, but I think he's on the way there, just going through some growing pains.
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I qualify any start where his arm doesn't fall off a decent start. I think he needs a few more side sessions to work on keeping his pitches down, and go from there. His next few starts should show us what he'll really be like – his nerves had to be all haywire yesterday.
I'm still waiting for his other shoe to drop. And by drop, I mean the shoe get stuck to the pavement with bubblegum and him pull a muscle separating his shoe from the pavement.

I didn't think Hampton pitched all that bad … considering he was throwing on nearly three years rest
This team is something else, though. Score nine times off Hamels, who has dominated you all season, and yet the big lead slips away. So many chances to score in the final four innings and couldn't cash in. Story of the season.
Gotta win today.
Bud.
