Chipper and Huddy To Disabled List
Written by Colin on July 28, 2008 – 4:33 pmIt’s over. See ya later. We’re done-skees. Time to call it a year.
Tim Hudson is on the DL. Chipper is too. McCann is missing a few days with a concussion.
And by the time Hudson gets back from the 15 day DL (forearm injury – unspecified) and Chipper’s hammy heals (who knows how long that’ll take), we’re gonna be so far out of first place we couldn’t come back with the entire NL All-Star Team. And in case you missed it, we don’t have many All-Stars on the team.
Time to pack up shop and turn it in for the year. Charlie Morton (called up, starts tonight) isn’t much of a replacement for Hudson and Clint Sammons (called up) isn’t McCann. Maybe, just maybe, Jeff Bennett (who was called up from Myrtle Beach) is a good replacement for Jo-Jo Reyes.
Time for the firesale. Who wants Tex, Ohman, Gonzalez, or Kotsay? They’re probably very easy to acquire right now.

I reallllly hope this is just a precautionary move for Hudson and that he doesn't have to take a visit to Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham. As far as the rest of the season goes, Tex, Ohman and Kotsay are the most tradeable guys. Tex is Tex, everyone is looking for a lefty reliever and Kotsay is playing very very well right now. Frank Wren stated he's not going to trade Gonzalez because he's cheap next year.
A lot of onliners are of the mind that the Braves will have enough money to sign a guy like Sabathia (as was said here in past discussions) or Ben Sheets. Depending on how the rest of this year goes, I could see them going for Sheets since he might be a little more affordable than Sabathia. But that's a long way away. Trading deadline is in the next three days, expect some big changes.
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Sheets is not dependable, in my opinion. I'd much rather see Sabathia here than Sheets.
We are going to see some crazy trades coming over the next few days… hold on to your hats.

Gonzalez isn't going anywhere. The Braves have already said he's the planned closer for next year and that they're not getting rid of him.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Oh yes, and is anyone NOT a good replacement for Jo-Jo Reyes?
By JBaldwin on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
OK… where's the hidden camera? The joke's not funny anymore.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Wouldn't it be nice if that was actually the case? It just seems to always get worse, when that doesn't seem possible any more.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Do you ever have a non-negative thing to say about Reyes?
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
(3-9, 5.33)
Need I say more?
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Glavine – 9-21 (4.76)
Maddux – 8-18 (5.59)
Both in their first two years, what does that mean? A pitcher's first two years don't mean anything. If a pitcher's going to get it together, he usually gets it in his third or fourth year. Jurrjens is a rare case of a rookie that's making a solid debut, you get one or two of those a year, not every pitcher is like that.
Reyes, btw, in the minors is 23-10 with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP, Jurrjens (in the same number of games) was 26-19 with a 3.20 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP, very comparable stats. Reyes did have 40 more walks since 2003, but also had 35 more strikeouts.
So yeah, 3-9 with a 5.33 ERA is not great. BUT, he's also had stretches where he's been lights out including two 1-0 losses. Reyes, as stated by Bobby Cox, made changes to his delivery during the year, and anyone that plays sports knows that adjustments made to anything, especially in the middle of the season, take time to get used to, whether they're a hitter or a pitcher.

Can we just use this as the Last Stand Game Thread tonight too?
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Sure we can. You make it out to the game tonight? I'm just at home.. actually helping my roommate hang drywall in the basement.

There goes Gregor complaining again….

i think I'd rather us keep Tex and get rid of Jeff….The Braves have been fortunate over the years regarding injuries….this year it has been if it can happen, it will!
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Jeff's 24, has had one bad year and two and a half good years and is cheap. If there's no prospect of winning the division, then who would you rather keep? The guy that'll be gone next year? Or the prospect that's a fan favorite that has tremendous unrealized potential? Keep in mind they're both gold glove potential fielders.

Both

I hate DirecTV – apparently Fox Sports South changed channels, and I don't get it anymore. Stupid.
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I'm not so sure I want to get rid of Jeff – he's allowed an off year. I do want to keep Tex, though.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
hehe, i'm with you on that one, but if I had to choose, I'd pick Francoeur.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Sounds like it's time to get cable.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Watching our team tonight is pretty much like watching a minor league game.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
It's pretty bad out there. at least some of these young guys are getting some experience. I know they haven't really projected Sammons to be a starter (which is probably why they've kept him), but he would be a great complement to McCann next year as long as he keeps improving defensively.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I agree….I like Sammons in the backup role better than Corky.
By Sheryl on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
i would add to that pending tex would sign a multi-year contract
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
This game is just painful to watch.
By Sheryl on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
tickets will soon get cheap lol
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I don't know if that would make much of a difference. I still think the Braves would be better off signing a high priced pitcher and not worrying about their offense. Francoeur's first three seasons were not flukes (which is why it was three seasons and not just one month in one season). This season is probably more of a fluke. He's learning and sometimes it takes some players longer than others to perfect new hitting styles, new ways of looking at the plate, etc. before they get it right. To be honest, I'd rather hold out for Francoeur than sign Tex to a multi year deal if he's not gonna be around in April, May and part of June.
But thats just my opinion. Francoeur's too young to trade and the only way I would see the Braves EVER trading Francoeur (at least until he's 26-27 and really does suck) is if they got a guy like Francisco Liriano, but we all know that ain't happening.

We need to just shut down and forfeit the rest of our games. Just heard this on the radio: Frank Wren will be addressing the media in the bottom half of the inning about Tim Hudson. Pete Van Wieren said that early indications = not good. Couple that with the 9-0 St. Louis lead, yeah…should be a great rest of the season.
I remember hearing forearm tightness, so if that rings any bells, that's what I'm thinking right now.
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
That is not a good sign at all . . . I swear, it's contagious.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Pete also made an interesting note about how, of the four veterans on the opening day rotation, what are the odds that Hampton would be the only one not on the DL this late in the season?
By PapaGLP on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Haha. Give it a week.

Hudson off to see Dr. Andrews……chances on TJ for Huddy?

Pretty high, a visit to my future boss is usually a very, very bad sign.

I agree about signing a high priced pitcher…..especially with the possibility of losing huddy

Couldn’t make this stuff up: Injury in “area” of ulnar collateral ligament. Wren wouldn’t say anything more or characterize severity of injury until after Hudson sees Dr. Andrews this week.
Unbelievable.

Not good at all.

This is the year from hell.

just when you think it can't get worse!!!!

Mike Hampton needs to be really freakin' careful. And Jurrjens too.
By Andrew_Vazzano on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Do you want to see the Phillies win?!?! NO!!!
Trade the Mets Tex, Ohman, and whomever else you feel would help the Mets for a Baconator. I promise it'll be tasty.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
There's a possibility of that if he does have the TJ surgery. This late in the season, it will take him 12-13 months to recover, which would mean August 2009 and one month of a slow pitch Hudson. Typically, pitchers regain their velocity at 15-16 months after surgery.
Taking the year off, assuming he gets the surgery in September, means Hudson will be at full strength around February or March of 2010, by then the new 14th street bridge will be open.
By Akshay982 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
Yeah…I'd rather see the Marlins win than either. So, we should trade them Tex and Ohman and whomever else we feel would help the Marlins for a cheap steak (Baconator's a little too right for our blood).

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!
By Bud on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
In a season full of dark moments, we just experienced Black Monday. Huddy is a major, major concern. If he has Tommy John surgery, I'm thinking he'll miss most of next season. That's a huge, huge blow, and really is going to shape what the Braves do this offseason. You're looking at a core rotation of Jurrjens and Campillo; one would think a big part of the freed-up payroll is going to have to go toward a top-of-the-rotation starter (or at least a No. 2 guy; Jurrjens has proven to me he "can" become a No. 1 very soon, but to throw that at him at age 23 with just one full year of experience is asking a heck of a lot, even for a guy who I think is going to be a star in this league for a long time … if he stays healthy).
Sigh …
Bud.

Trade the Marlins Tex for Hanley, straight up. Throw in Ohman to sweeten the deal. Imagine Hanley / Escobar up the middle next year.
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I'd rather the Phillies win than the Mets. I'm sorry, but I hate all NY teams. Phillies come in a close second. The Marlins deserve it. Go Fish!
By colin_ake60861 on Feb 2, 2009 | Reply
I'm with ya Bud. We've got to get experienced help at the top of the rotation for next year. Jurrjens is our #1 right now – that's got to be intimidating for a young guy in his first season. He's great, but I don't want to burn him all up in his first couple years.
So now in addition to needing to work on our offense (which has been flatlining all season), we have no rotation. And overworking Morton is not helping his development – he's not doing well.
