Braves Re-Sign Norton
Written by Colin on December 20, 2008 – 5:13 pmThe Braves locked up their best pinch hitter for the next year, re-signing Greg Norton to a one year contract. Norton as clutch as a pinch hitter, batting .316 off the bench. He also hit .322 after the All-Star break. Norton won’t fill the ‘big outfield bat’ hole but he does provide a very solid bat to pinch hit.
I do not want to see Norton back as a regular position player – he saw far too much playing time last year for my comfort – but he’s a great bat to have as a pinch hitter. Are you glad to see Norton back with the Braves in 2009?
We’ll keep you updated as we continue to follow the Braves’ offseason. Please remember that you can reach the BravesBlast Mailbag by simply emailing us a question. We will address it as soon as possible – drop us a line!

Yeah, if we couldn't even sign someone like Norton, our offseason would REALLY be screwed. He's a solid dude off the bench, even if he makes routine plays look difficult defensively.

Solid signing. 1 year at 800K for a solid pinch hitter and, if needed, position player, I'll take that deal any day.
I'm just glad something went right this offseason.

I agree that the price was right to keep Norton around. He's a great pinch hitter in clutch situations which can give you a few wins down the stretch.
I'm never comfortable seeing him in the field long-term, but that's a tradeoff that can be made I guess.

Norton was a great signing. He is a switch-hitter which greatly increases his value. Not to mention he can play multiple positions.
