Huddy’s 2010 Club Option

Written by Colin on January 27, 2009 – 1:58 am

We got a request to look at why Tim Hudson may be unhappy about the Braves’ club option for the 2010 season. Hudson will make $13 million this year and should be back in the rotation towards the end of the season. If he’s healthy, we’ll likely see him back in the rotation in 2010 – the club has an option they can exercise for that season. Huddy stands to make $12 million from the 2010 season if that option is exercised.

Why would Hudson be unhappy about the club option? The only reason I can think of is that Hudson believes he can make more on the open market and he’s not getting any younger. That said, he’s loved playing with the Braves and being close to home (he’s from Columbus, GA) as far as we know. I think that even if he is “unhappy” it’s more of a “wish I could sign a new contract” and not anything like a “don’t like the Braves anymore.”

Tim Hudson will probably be back with the Braves in 2010 – and I hope he is back and healthy. He’ll make $12 million, which is a decent amount of money. I think he’ll take the year to prove that he’s healthy and able to still pitch successfully – and get more money on the other side. I don’t think I’d be that unhappy with the club option for $12 million in 2010 – but that’s just me.

I don't see why the Braves wouldn't pick up the 2010 option for Hudson as long as he gets back to health. Depending on how the season is going for the Braves in 2009, they don't need to rush him back to try and get him in the rotation. Just make sure that he's healed and rehabbed properly.

I, for one, want to see Hudson in Atlanta for quite some time.

I totally agree with you Jonathan, I want to see Tim first of all healthy and remain in an Atlanta uniform for many years to come. I believe living in Georgia will carry some weight in his decision. Maybe what I have read is just a little leverage talk. After what happened with John smoltz it makes me a little bit uneasy when I hear someone like Tim is unhappy. I have heard the cost of living in places like NY is much greater than Atlanta so I hope we find the money to sign him. Best wishes to Tim and the Braves. God bless

I'd love to have Tim back. My only question is that I have seen he has a club option but I've also read that his agent says its mutual. Does anyone know for sure? If it is a club option you can expect to see Hudson in Atlanta in '10.

Basically, it's a club option with a $1 million buyout. Hudson has the right to void the option and would forfeit the buyout in that case.

I have not seen anything saying Hudson is unhappy with his contract. Hopefully Hudson finishes his career wearing the Tomahawk.

And this is just a small note but Tim Hudson's hometown is actually Phenix City, AL but everyone says Columbus, GA because it's a much better city than Phenix City. Phenix City is a really small town.

It's like where I live. I actually live in a small town in Alabama called Warrior but I tell everyone I live in Birmingham because everyone knows where that's at.

I meant to say bigger not better. My bad.

Johnathan what do you think if he is healthy will we have Tim in 2010 and beyond? I hope you have some insight to this question. I sure hope we have Tim a long time. God bless

I don't see Hudson in Atlanta to much longer. Remember that we have Lowe, Vazquez, and Kawakami for a few years and Hanson and other prospects almost major league ready. Atlanta is on the brink of a youth movement. By 2011 we'll have several players ready to make the jump into the big league.

If he proves to be healthy and pitching well at season's end, then you can expect the braves to pick up the option year. Hudson signed the contact and should only be unhappy with himself. This is why I am oppose to long contracts. If the player get hurt early in the contact, the team loses. If he is very productive, then he wants his contract reconfigured well before it expires.

Vazquez is only under contract for this year and next. Vazquez will probably be traded after this year to make room for Hanson.

2010 Rotation of Lowe, Hudson, Jurrjens, Kawakami, Hanson

I read somewhere that Kawakami will be the odd man out if Vazquez isnt traded. Guess we'll have to see. But I think Hudson's last year with the Braves will probably be after the '10 season.

I don't agree. I expect Hudson to be resigned and us to have that rotation of Lowe, Hudson, Jurrjens, Kawakami and Hanson for a few years. I personally don't think Morton, Parr or Reyes have a future with the Braves. I think they are nothing more than warm bodies. Just filling space until the likes of Jeff Locke, Cole Rohrbough, Julio Teheran, Craig Kimbrel are ready for the majors in a couple of years. I think Kris Medlan might win a spot in the bullpen this year and then be one of those guys that down the road possibly moves into the rotation.

Just looking at Baseball America's projections for 2012 they Charlie Morton in the rotation with Kimbrel as the closer.

I dont know we have the money to lock in Hudson. You have to sign Francoeur long term if he turns around. KJ and Escobar will have pay days coming up. Hudson is going to want ace money and I dont know that the Braves will do it. Just a thought.

I just read that Glavine has been given a clean bill of health, I think a seasoned vet or two is important to any club. Atlanta is in the best position, since the glory years. They have barring a blizzard of injuries, like last year, a pitching staff that could be the best in the NL East. They have a great group from the farm in the waiting. Tim Hudson if all goes well coming back by September. Tim could be the lift at that point in the season that Atlanta needs to put them over the top. As for what happens after that may depend on our economy. I hope we can keep Tim for a while. God bless our country

The past 4 years even the final year we won the division we have been killed by injuries. One of the reasons I feel so good about our team this year is because I feel our luck with the injuries is about to change for the better. The Phils were extreming lucky last year in that they had very little injuries to deal with.

    Money won't be a problem.

Yep, Glavine was cleared. Wrote a new post about that. I think it'll be interesting to see what Wren does from here with him.

I'm with you Tim. I think the Braves still see Hudson filling the 1-2 role depending on injuries for a few years still. I like having Hudson around a lot and hope the finances work out to the point where it won't be a problem to keep him around.

My biggest hope is that the Braves don't rush him back, especially if there is no shot at the playoffs. I'd just as soon wait and see Hudson back in 2010 than chancing injury in 2009 trying to bring him back too early. We'll see how the season shapes up.

    I agree 100 percent.
