Glavine Offered Contract

Written by Colin on February 7, 2009 – 10:28 am

The Braves offered Tom Glavine a one year contract Friday worth between $1-2M. Glavine, who is 42 and recovering from elbow and shoulder surgery, recently began pitching again and is feeling good and is confident he can pitch this year. Frank Wren also appears to have confidence in Glavine, even if he has limited resources with which to pursue him.

Glavine has been rumored to desire a one year contract worth between $2M and $3M guaranteed and maybe double that after incentives. If he wants to stay with the Braves, he’s going to need to accept much less than that – the Braves have limited payroll flexibility as they’re still pursuing Will Ohman and are still looking towards the possibility of landing an outfield bat (signing Abreu or trading for Swisher or Nady).  Glavine now has to decide if it’s worth it to him to take less money to pitch in Atlanta – he did it last year but in what may be his last year now, he needs to determine whether he values money more or proximity to family more. I don’t say that as a slam in any way – Glav could probably pull down more money elsewhere.

We’d love to have him back – the Braves need a lefty on the staff, despite being absolutely STACKED with arms this year. One good piece of news: Glavine was asked yesterday to comment on the possibility of pitching for a team other than the Braves and he indicated that “We aren’t down that road yet.”

Do you think Glavine will take the offer or head somewhere else for more money?

I only hope Tom will not get greedy and sign close to his family. I personally believe he will. This should open the door to sign Will Ohman. With that said I believe the signing of Tom,and Will does open the opportunity to trade for a Swisher or Nady. I see nothing, but positives in signing Tom, plus he's a pretty good pitcher. Best Wishes

I honestly think he should take the money. There's not much left in the tank, he should be glad the braves are considering him for a starting spot. Look at what they did to Andrew they only offered him a minor league deal which i thought was a little offensive i would like to see him back in a braves uni. But other than that he would be a good addition and a mentor for Hanson when he comes up so let's keep him around.

I would like to have Tom back but I don't see it as a must have. I really hope the Ohman thing gets done. But signing Glavine and Ohman would pretty much take us out of the running for outfield help w/out moving money first.

I don't really know which way this one will go . . . I think it's pretty much all in Tommy's court as to what he wants to do. I'm sure he could pull some more money elsewhere, it just all comes down to what is most important to him.

Glavine's comments to AJC were sickening. He is the same selfish pitcher who left for New York six years ago. Baseball is littered with prima donas and our prospects don't need to be mentored by a 300-game winner who exemplifies that non-team oriented behavior.

I'm with you. After reading the comments, I would rather not have him back. I think I lost some respect for the man.
