Josh Anderson Traded To Tigers
Written by Colin on March 30, 2009 – 1:51 pmJosh Anderson won’t be making the major league roster out of spring training this year – at least not for the Braves. The center fielder was traded to the Detroit Tigers for a hard-throwing right-handed minor league pitcher named Rudy Darrow. Anderson started the spring as the favorite for the center field starting spot, but Jordan Schafer has performed very well this spring. He’s expected to land the starting job now that Anderson is no longer with the organization.
Rudy Darrow spent last season at the A and AA level, where he had a 2.02 ERA in 47 appearances. He had 57 K’s in just over 63 innings, with 23 walks. He’ll probably start out at AA in Mississippi.
What are your thoughts on the trade? We essentially turned Oscar Villarreal into Rudy Darrow. Good trade? Bad trade?

With the way Schaefer is playing this is a good thing. At least we are getting something. Schaefer has more to offer than Anderson. Schaefer is a five tool player. I think he will offer more than Anderson will offensively and thats what we need right now.

I think it's a good move on the part of Atlanta. I'm sure Wren has been searching for weeks on moving Anderson and this is his best bet. Next year, they're going to lose Soriano and Gonzalez who will probably be completely back at full strength. It'll be a tough loss and they'll need to retool their 'pen. Rudy Darrow seems like a solid reliever. He threw very well on Tommy Hanson's team in the AFL and has put up excellent minor league numbers the past few years. Detroit considered him one of their premiere prospects. Darrow could be a major player in the Braves bullpen for years to come. I think Anderson would have played a great center field and stole plenty of bases, but like Larry said, Atlanta really needs offense. Schaefer is still a damn good player, despite his set back and he'll do a great job. It should be an interesting year.

i dont mind the trade, if schaefer wouldnt of been suspended, he would have had the job then anyway, i really had high hopes of having a legit centerfielder with anderson after andruw left, but it was so up in the air on who would be the future out in center, we really didnt have enough time to see what either schaefer or anderson could do in a full season….i guess we will find out now. We can always use help in the pen, i dont know much about Darrow, but with Gonzalez healthy i optimistic we can make noise in the east this season.

I always liked Josh Anderson, but I kinda feel like the trade was the right thing to do. Hopefully Schafer can produce in Atlanta and the Braves don't regret the decision. It's always a crapshoot making the jump to the majors, but I don't have any doubts that he can at least fill the role well.

I like Josh Anderson, I wish the very best for him. I too hope it was not a mistake by trading him, but sometimes when you have a surplus of players in one area you have to make decisions. I think it would be good to expand major league rosters to 28 players. We could have held on to Josh to see if Schafer can handle it. I understand Darrow is a good prospect, that is all I know about him. I know in these times with teams, especially in small markets expanding rosters might be a burden. Usually it players without those big contracts, out of options, that get caught in these situations like Josh did. I wish the best for Josh, and Jordan I hope it works out well for both. GO BRAVES!!!!!!!

I was hoping that Schafer would win the job from the beginning of spring. Both him and Anderson played well but I think this is a good trade and brings back a long term asset in the pen. Overall I think it is a good move and hopefully Schafer will be a great CF and leadoff guy.

Could they have gotten anything more out of this deal? RH low minor league relief pitcher? I figured he would have been packaged in a bigger and better deal. I consider it more like givving him away then trading. From what all the broadcasters were saying, Anderson would have never cleared waivers because too many teams would love to have him. He is a speedy leadoff hitter, who had an unbelivable hitting streak in the minors. Is Shafer ready to play everyday and where will he bat? Leadoff would be a lot of presure on a rookie!
