Braves Release Tom Glavine

Written by Jonathan on June 3, 2009 – 4:59 pm

Sources cloes to Major League Baseball report that the Braves have released pitcher Tom Glavine, who, just days ago, was reportedly healthy and ready to return to pitch for the Braves.  Glavine was set to be paid $1 million when added to the active roster and another $1.25 million each for 30 and 90 days on the active roster.

After returning to Atlanta last season, Glavine had shoulder and elbow surgeries and has been attempting to regain the ability to pitch at the major league level.  After throwing eleven scoreless innings in his latest two rehab starts, Glavine indicated that he was ready to head back to Atlanta.

Glavine, 43, has 305-career wins and spent the first sixteen seasons of his major-league career with the Braves.  Since returning to the Braves in 2008, he made only 13 starts before being sidelined by injuries.  His return in the 2009 season was set back in April by some recurring injuries however.  Glavine has stated that he is not ready to retire and was fully looking forward to pitching in Atlanta this season.  It’s not yet clear what options he will pursue.

I wonder what this signifies for the Braves?  Are there bigger plans in the works? Or is it just time for Tommy to hang it up?  More on this as we find out.

I have always figured that Tommy's days were numbered but this is just another move lacking class by Wren and the front office. I thought we would see a start or 2 and then make a decision… I guess the same 1 or 2 million bucks that caused the Smoltz PR nightmare will cause the Braves another. Glavine you gave us all you had I hope this is not the end for you because you deserve a shot. Hanson we are ready for you to prove what you got. Chipper is now the final 90's Brave. WOW

This isn't related but the Braves just acquired Nate McLouth from the Pirates for Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke.

there is no way you let a guy come so far and then release him like that. if you think he doesn't have it anymore let him show you in the majors. great outings in rehab just wasted. I have met some of the upper ups and let me tell you they are not exacally full of class. and this year with some of the things they have done just shows me that my thoughts on them are not wrong at all.

I agree with Hanson over Glavine however, he should not have been led to believe that he was close to being placed on the roster. The guy can still pitch, but his velocity is too low…. even for his standards. The best he could hope for was to last five innings and end his career with no injury. Thanks for the years of service. We were blessed to see one of the great lefties of our time. Also, thanks for the shutout that provided our only WS win.

So everyone wants he Braves to bring up the young guys to make the moves, but when they do we moan: ooooooooooo we don't have any class, we don't know what we are doing, why didn't we just trade an Aball reserve for Adam Dunn. At some point the real world has to come into play. If you want the young guys to move in this is a sad result that can not be avoided. Wren traded three expendable parts for a young all-star, golden Glover under contract for 4 years, who has speed and power and along the way moved the "next big thing" into the starting rotation. You say classless, I SAY Brilliant.

The trade was brillant. The way they bullshitted Glavine was classless. The majority of the team seemed to agree with out fully saying it to. We move on but I guess there is no book written on how to dump a Hall of Fame pitcher 2 days before he gets 1 million bucks.
