The Braves traded for All-Star centerfielder Nate McLouth today, sending three prospects to the Pirates. McLouth will provide a much needed solid power bat in the middle of the lineup, adding punch to the outfield as well as speed. The Braves part with Gorkys Hernandez (came from the Tigers with Jurrjens), Charlie Morton, and pitcher Jeff Locke.

McLouth is hitting .256 this year. Last year he finished with a .276 average, 26 home runs, 94 RBIs, and 23 stolen bases. He’ll provide some protection for Chipper and McCann – which is something they need to remain productive.

With this activity today, the Braves appear to be making a move to make a run this season – and they’re not afraid of committing early. We’re only 4 games back in the NL East and have the pitching to take us a long way – even without Hudson coming back later this year. It’s good to see the Braves make the moves necessary to get some more offense ready to go. I’m impressed – this isn’t something we’re used to seeing the Braves do. What are your thoughts? Is McLouth the answer or do we need to make additional moves?

One thing is certain in my mind – Jeff Francoeur’s on the hotseat. We’ve got a LOT of outfield talent coming up and if he doesn’t produce, he’s not around forever.

Chalk Charlie Morton up as the first pitching casuality of the season for the Braves, something that became all to familiar throughout the 2008 season. Morton was not likely to have a spot in Atlanta come Opening Day, but this is still a setback for the Braves’ pitchers. Morton had just completed a bullpen session yesterday that impressed Bobby Cox, but strained a muscle in his side during on of his first few pitches of throwing batting practice. The severity of the injury has not yet been determined.

Kenshin Kawakami continues to impress in Spring Training, throwing his second batting-practice session yesterday. After throw mostly fastballs in his first session, Kawakami brought a little more to the table this time around, working in the curveball and cutter. The amount of solid hitting against him saw a significant drop the second time around and Kawakami’s working to make it clear why he was a star in Japan. We’ll see him in action for the first time this preseason with his Friday start against the Pirates.

Along that line, Bobby Cox has laid out some of the projected starters for the upcoming Spring Training games. Here are the starters that have been announced so far:

2/25 – vs. Tigers – Jair Jurrjens
2/26 – vs. Astros – Jorge Campillo, Tommy Hanson
2/27 – vs. Pirates – Kenshin Kawakami
2/28 – vs. Blue Jays – Derek Lowe
3/01 – vs. Phillies – Charlie Morton (Questionable)
3/02 – Intrasquad – Javier Vazquez, Jair Jurrjens
3/03 – vs. Panama – Tommy Hanson
3/04 – vs. Yankees – Kenshin Kawakami

So things are starting to shape up for the pitchers in Florida and we’re already through our first injury of the preseason. Let’s hope they are limited. Who are you excited to get a first look at for the season? I personally can’t wait to get a look at Tommy Hanson on the ESPN broadcast of the game on Thursday.

They’ll get published soon. Please continue to offer Suggestions using the tab to your left or filling out the Mailbag form.

Tim wrote the BravesBlast mailbag with the following question:

Hi guys…I’ve just about had it with Mark Bowman over at MLB.com. His latest post about his projected rotation has Jo Jo Reyes penciled in as the 5th starter. What I want to know is this: What is he seeing that I’m missing? Reyes was by far our worst option last year. Why wouldn’t you use Campillo or even Morton in the 5 spot? Thanks and great site!

Thanks for the submission, Tim. First of all, I think the majority of the BravesBlast staff would puke if Reyes was flat-out awarded the fifth rotation spot. Sure, he’s got a chance at winning it, but only if all goes wrong. Obviously Lowe/Jurrjens/Vazquez/Kawakami are the first four pitchers in the 5-man rotation. Let’s take a look at the fifth rotation spot options.

Jorge Campillo is the first and best option that’s on the roster right now. Campillo has been likened to Greg Maddux and doesn’t have super impressive speed – but he has control going for him. Last year, he stepped into the rotation and impressed with an 8-7 record with a 3.91 ERA. And that was WITH that horrible luck the Braves had last year. Campillo is my top pick. If he doesn’t make the rotation, our bullpen is THAT much deeper with Campillo as the long reliever.

Tom Glavine isn’t even an option until he’s on the roster. He’s supposedly the guy that would trump the other candidates for the position – and he’s good – but do we really need to pay $3-5M for a fifth starter? We *could* sign Glavine, but I’m not sure we need to.

Charlie Morton may not be ready for the bigs, but he’ll get a chance to try and prove he’s ready. He’s 25 and young – and didn’t have the best luck in the big leagues last year. That said, I like Morton and as he matures I think he’ll be a decent 4th or 5th starter.

Jo-Jo Reyes is not a good option. He’s just not. I’m sorry, but when I mentioned to Jonathan that I was writing this article, he said the following about Jo-Jo. “Give me Campillo, or anyone but Jo-Jo, please. I can’t spend another part of a season not watching every 5th game just because I know I’ll get angry.” That about sums Jo-Jo up. He also drives a Toyota Previa. Ok probably not, but it’s a long-standing joke amongst the crew here.

James Parr is a longshot. He went 1-0 in 5 starts with a 4.84 ERA last fall. He could make the rotation if everyone else flounders and he shines in spring training. Otherwise he spends at least the beginning of the year in Richmond.

Tommy Hanson is more likely to make the rotation in the middle of the season. I’d prefer him take his time before he gets to Atlanta – I want him to absolutely stun batters once he’s here. I’m looking forward to seeing him but don’t want to rush him. The sneak preview in Spring Training will be nice.

So there you have it – the main contenders for the 5th rotation slot. Discuss.

The Braves went into the offseason with several needs:

Two Starting Pitchers

We’ve acquired three. Ace-to-be Derek Lowe, Kenshin Kawakami signed as free agents. The third, Javier Vazquez, was acquired via trade from the White Sox. The three pitchers will augment the Braves’ Jair Jurrjens as the four regular starters (all can eat innings), and we’ll likely see Jorge Campillo, Charlie Morton, and perhaps Tommy Hanson fight for the fifth rotation spot. Now that we’ve got a stable rotation, look for the Braves not to rush Hanson to the big leagues, though he’ll be ready in a year or two to start regularly. When Tim Hudson comes back from Tommy John surgery late in the season, he’ll provide the Braves with one of the best rotations late in the season, if he’s true to form. The Braves’ rotation won’t be something to sneeze at, even though it’s not going to be the best rotation in the history of baseball.

An Outfield Bat

I’d imagine the Braves are still looking to fill this need. Even though we’ve got Jeff Francoeur, Matt Diaz, Josh Anderson, Gregor Blanco, Brandon Jones, and Jordan Schafer as options, we need a bat to help replace the hole left by Teixeira’s departure and to protect Chipper in the lineup. If the Braves do sign someone, it will only be for a year or two, because in addition to the players I already listed, Gorkeys Hernandez and Jason Heyward are outfield prospects in the minor league system, just two-three years away. Maybe Heyward switches to first, but there’s still a glut of good prospects waiting to play outfield for the Braves. I don’t know if we fill this or go with young talent, but if we want to compete in the NL East, we probably need another bat somewhere in the lineup. Left field is a logical position for that bat to play. If I were Wren, I’d look at Bobby Abreu for this role.

Extending Chipper’s Contract

Please, Braves, do this now. Smoltz didn’t retire here, but Chipper needs to. We’re starting to get a reputation for getting the best years out of our players, making this their home, and sending them elsewhere to die. See Aaron, Murphy, Justice, Maddux, Glavine (though he left of his own free will), and now Smoltz. Don’t let it happen to Chipper.

A Backup Catcher

Done. It flew under the radar, but the Braves signed Dave Ross to a two-year deal to back up Brian McCann early in December. He’ll make ~$1.5M each year he’s here. The Braves have been resting McCann once a week or so to try and save his knees, so we’ll see some time out of Ross. Ross hit .225 with 3 HRs and 13 RBI last year for Cincinnati and Boston in 142 at-bats in 60 games.

Summary

The Braves will now turn to signing a bat for the outfield, extending Chipper’s contract, and re-signing Will Ohman. Once that’s done, I’d say we’re set for this offseason. I don’t think we’ll see the Braves sign any more starting pitchers. Setup arms in the ‘pen will come via Campillo and our farm system. Think I missed anything? Made bad assumptions? Make a comment and we’ll have some discussion about it.

Ignoring The Bad

By the way, I’m ignoring everything that didn’t go right. Rather not talk about it – no reason to dwell on it!

The New York Post is reporting that the Braves are atop the Peavy pile and that currently many expect we’ll have Peavy pitching for us next season.

“The Jake Peavy sweepstakes will proceed concurrently with the World Series, and the expectation of major league executives polled over the past two days is that the Braves are going to end up with the Padre right-hander… The Braves…have the base from which to make a deal and a history of packaging youngsters to get veterans they crave such as Mark Teixeira and Tim Hudson. They also are willing to move quickly, as exhibited by the Oct. 29 deal made last year in which they obtained Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez from Detroit for Edgar Renteria, the first major trade of the past offseason. And the Braves appear more motivated than the Cardinals, Cubs or Dodgers to jump out for Peavy.”

That’s what I like to hear. Only question now is how many prospects we have to get rid of to land Peavy for four years. Yunel Escobar or Kelly Johnson (or both) will likely have to go. Other names mentioned include Jo-Jo Reyes, Charlie Morton, possibly Tommy Hanson, and even Jordan Schafer. Who knows what the Braves will be willing to part with, but there are hints they are going to try and keep the carnage as insignificant as possible. The bottom line with any of the pitching prospects is that we hope they turn into someone like Peavy, and getting Peavy for four years is a pretty good return on a prospect that may not be that good for that long.

Chipper Jones has described Peavy as the “perfect fit” according to the AJC, and also would love to see the Braves go after A.J. Burnet, who will be a free agent.

How you like us now, NL East?

Well we’ve seen a bunch of Braves news lately, so we’ll hit it real fast for ya:

Morton pitched well yesterday – one hit through seven innings, but he gave up a home run to Prince Fielder, and the Braves fell 4-2.

C.C. Sabathia showed us yesterday why we need to sign him in the offseason. 8 1/3 innings of four-hit ball. He’s insane.

Tim Hudson is going ahead with Tommy John surgery – Dr. James Andrews (the recognized expert in this area) will perform the surgery. Hudson will have a 12 month rehab time before he is expected back with the team.

Chipper is expecting to be back in the lineup Friday, the first day he’s eligible off the DL. He says that “everything feels great” and he’s no longer having trouble with either his hamstring or his quad.

Brian McCann should be expected back in the starting lineup Monday – he’s nearly done recovering from his concussion. He may pinch hit today.

Casey Kotchman is off to a slow start in the NL – only 2 for 16 – with 1 RBI. Yes, it’s only been four games, but he’s not on fire.

Royce Ring has been designated for assignment after a really ugly stretch where his ERA jumped 5 runs. That’s not big league ball stuff. Vladimir Nunez is expected to replace him. Ring, according to the AJC, has the “distinction of the worst statistical season of any reliever in the history of the franchise since the 1870s, among those who appeared in as many games as he did.” That didn’t work out well – he’s a specialist and shouldn’t be pitching as much as he did.

Well there ya have it – maybe we’ll see you at the Stadium today. Ben Sheets is going against Jorge Campillo. Go Braves!

Charlie Morton takes the mound tonight against the Phillies – hoping the Braves offense can back him this time out. And, unexpectedly, Chipper Jones may be in the lineup doing his part. That’ll help Morton feel happier – or even Chipper – if you will, about this game.

Chipper ran some sprints today and noticed significant improvement in his right quad. He told Bobby Cox about an hour ago he was ready to be in the lineup for the game tonight. The final decision will be made after batting practice, but Chipper, who was expected to go on the DL today, normally knows his body pretty well. I’d expect to see him doing his part. Hopefully he’s kept up his hot swing while he’s been unable to run, because I can’t wait to see him in front of Mark Teixeira, who has been absolutely on fire recently. Oh, and we get Mark Kotsay back from the DL tonight. And if that’s not good enough, we’ll get Yunel Escobar back in the lineup tomorrow. We’ll see an improvement in offense with those three.

Morton needs a win. He’s had three starts and is 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA, but he’s pitched very well in all of those starts – not giving up more than 3 earned runs. He’s due tonight and if the guys can deliver offensively, we should see another W for the Bravos.

Time to make a run to the top of the division, gentlemen. Go get ‘em!

- Colin

Sometimes the final score doesn’t reflect the pitcher’s performance at all.Such was the case last night at Turner Field. Despite perfect baseball weather last night, the Braves early defensive errors (resulting in at least 2 unearned runs), doomed the home team.

You know you have sloppy fielding when the pitcher loses the game, and his ERA drops.

Raise your hand if you had a fielding error last night?

(Yunnel Escobar raises hand)
(Omar Infante raises hand)
(Jeff Francoeur raises both hands)

Hey, Brandon Jones, I’m looking at you! What’s up with running in on a fly ball and letting it go over your head—for the second time this year? How that wasn’t called an error, I do not know.

And Escobar, we love your passion, but we need you in the line-up more than we need you in the clubhouse taking a shower.

Then in the 9th, for a short moment in time, 30,000+ fans were unified as the Braves started to rally. Quickly, runners were on. Then Francoeur, hitting .243, gets out. Not to pile on Jeffrey like much of the Atlanta media, but this was really the nail in the coffin for the game.

But, with the tying runner on third, with two outs, to a screaming, raucous crowd, a lone batter walked to the plate. It was…….Corky Miller. With my hands over my eyes, I peeked through my fingers at the scoreboard and noted his .103 batting average. Would the last position player on the bench be hero or goat? Let’s just say that, upon leaving the field, he would have felt just fine in a barnyard.

However, there were some bright spots. Out of the lineup for several days due to an aggravated quad, Chipper Jones took to the plate, looking as if he owned it. On the second pitch, with the grace of a black belt, punched an easy single into left centerfield. He goes to first, a pinch runner comes in, and he strolls back to the dugout. Honestly, he makes it look easy.

And it’s always fun to see Tex get hot. With a homer and a double, he seems to be finding a groove.

It’s official; I’m on the Charlie Morton bandwagon. I like what I see in this kid. This should have been another “X” in the “W” column for him.

Sorry, Charlie.

Jair Jurrjens is doing his best Mike Hampton imitation.

Not only is Jurrjens left handed, but he fell walking down the dugout stairs last night after the Braves’ loss to the Cubs and sprained his ankle. His ankle did not get better overnight and he’ll miss today’s start. The Braves and Jurrjens hope he doesn’t have to head to the DL to join the rest of the Braves’ pitching staff.

Jurrjens has been perhaps the Braves’ most solid starter this season – not missing a start – until tonight. Jurrjens’ right ankle will hopefully heal up before his next start, but with the way things have been going, we may just want to go ahead and promote the entire AAA pitching staff.

The Braves also confirmed that Charlie Morton is likely to start Sunday against the Angels in a game televised by ESPN. Jeff Bennett is stepping in for the Braves tonight.

Frank Wren was quoted as saying “I feel like I’m in the twilight zone.”

Don’t we all, Frank. What’s next? Does anyone have Hudson in the “next Brave to miss a start” pool?

John Smoltz has a torn labrum – significantly more damage than they hoped to find during surgery yesterday. His future with the club is “uncertain” at this point. He’s a fierce competitor, but can he come back from this surgery? It took the spry Blaine Boyer nearly two years to recover from similar surgery.

Meanwhile, Tom Glavine strained his elbow and was placed on the DL. Apparently from the first pitch last night his elbow hurt, but he pitched through the pain only to be pulled with the elbow strain.

So there’s the Braves’ two elder statesmen having health issues. Glavine is on the DL for the second time this season – and the second time in his long career. Smoltzie is gone for at least this season, maybe for good. And the Braves are back below .500, trying to figure out how to win on the road and where they can find some pitching.

This time, more than ever, we’ve got to figure out where we’re going to get some starting pitching, and fast. I maintain that Charlie Morton is ready – the traditional measure for minor league pitchers is innings pitched, and he’s thrown just under 600 innings. He’s also 5-2 with a 2.05 ERA and 72 K’s to 27 walks. Bring him up and give him a shot – he impressed in spring training.

We also likely should trade for another solid arm. Even if we bring Morton up, we’re pitching Hudson, Jurrjens, Campillo, Morton, and Reyes. If we want to win and go into the post season, we need another solid arm. Jonathan’s a big proponent of trading Mark Teixeira for a young arm with some life left on the contract. I’m not sure what he said Tex is supposed to ask for at the end of the season, but supposedly we may not be able to afford it even without Hampton, Smoltz, and Glavine’s contracts. I’ll let him explain that more here.

What do you think we should do? Should we let Jo-Jo Reyes fight it out for that fifth spot? Can he make it at the big league level? Is Morton ready, or am I just talking out of the seat of my pants?

This rotation can’t win the division.

There, I said it. With John Smoltz and his bum shoulder pushing him to the bullpen (hopefully if he can heal), our starting rotation looks a wee bit tattered. Think I’m kidding? Take a look at the starting rotation. Hudson has been the Ace so far, with six wins. Jurrjens has been great with four wins and 41 strikeouts in eight starts. And then we have Glavine, who is better than his record shows, deserving better than a 1-1 record, but concerning with a 4.41 ERA and a 1-1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Past that, it’s not a rotation. It’s a random weekly game of bingo that decides between Chuck James, Jo-Jo Reyes, and Jeff Bennett and they rotate out as soon as one of them sucks it up. And it’s not something that will let us compete into September. At least Chuck’s out of the consideration for now, but that just leaves room for another Joe Somebody to try.

We had depth, supposedly. But Smoltz has had shoulder issues – and he’s had those sporadically at the end of the season in seasons past. And I can’t even discuss what happened to Hampton without feeling like I’d be suggesting he could heal. And until he proves me wrong, I won’t believe it’s a possibility. But can we make it to September? I’m doubtful. Something has to be done.

Sure, we’re first in the league in ERA and BAA, and second in OPS allowed and third in WHIP, but does that mean jack diddly when we have three starters? It won’t last long, I tell you. We’ll miss Smoltz as long as his shoulder keeps him pitching two innings late in the game. We need a strong starter. And unless Jo-Jo Reyes can keep it up and start pitching like he pitches in AAA ball, where there’s less pressure, or Jeff Bennett turns a page for the rest of the season, we’ll be a team with three consistent starters and two fillers. It concerns me.

Do we make a move? We have tons of young outfielders in the minor league system. Do we bring up Charlie Morton from AAA and see if he is ready for the big time? I’m just an armchair GM, sure, but I’m not the only one in Atlanta who is a little concerned about our rotation.

When the hottest hitter in baseball is sitting out of the lineup, you’d expect that there’d be a couple offensive hitches. Chipper sat with a mild groin strain last night, and the Braves were unable to get anything going against Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies. Kelly Johnson also got a break and Ruben Gotay got the start at second. Omar Infante got the start at third for Chipper. The offense was benign without Chipper and nothing got going all night long.

Starting on the mound for the Braves was Chuck James, who had given up four home runs in 19 innings to date this year. He gave up three homers and five runs in just four innings last night. To quote him “I’ve just got to learn how to pitch again.” I know that the Citizens Bank Ballpark is famous for being a hitters park, but the Braves have to get more out of their starters to compete in games like this.

Cole Hamels, on the other hand, was excellent. He baffled Braves hitters all night long and ended with a four-hit shutout. That makes the Braves’ road record 6-16 – and yes, that’s the worst in the majors.

James is likely out of the starting rotation for a bit here. Who do you want to see replace him? Jeff Bennett? The AJC suggested Charlie Morton, a pitching prospect we saw in spring training but has been spending some time at Richmond before he comes to the majors. Do you think it’s time to give Morton a go?

After dropping their final Grapefruit league game 9-4 to the division rival Mets Thursday afternoon, the Braves pack their bags and head north. They’ll play exhibition games Friday and Saturday at Turner Field before heading to Washington DC to help open the Nationals’ new stadium.

Cox let his relievers pitch the entire game, giving Peter Moylan the start. Moylan gave up three earned runs in his inning of work. Chris Resop and Royce Ring helped make their case for the big league roster by striking out two each in their scoreless innings. Charlie Morton (whom yes, we sent down to the minors once already) pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs. He walked four.

Mark Teixeira continued his good hitting as of late, knocking in two runs on one hit and a sacrifice fly. Matt Diaz added a two-hit game, and Chipper and Kelly Johnson doubled. In a continuation of the recent battle for the backup infield slot, both Brent Lillibridge and Martin Prado knocked in a run.

Next up, Jair Jurrjens starts for the Braves Friday against the Cleveland Indians. Sunday, Tim Hudson gets the start against the Washington Nationals, and Monday we’ll see our good friend Tom Glavine start against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Braves cut six players from their spring roster Wednesday in their first round of cuts. The six players included five pitchers and catcher J.C. Boscan. Charlie Morton was optioned to Class AAA Richmond, along with Zach Schreiber and Phil Stockman. Matt DeSalvo was re-assigned to Richmond. Jairo Cuevas was optioned to Class AA in Mississippi, and J.C. Boscan was re-assigned to Mississippi.

Morton pitched three innings this spring and gave up 4 runs (only one earned) on 5 hits. Cox likes Morton – said he thinks Morton “is going to be a good pitcher.” Quite frankly, we’re a little surprised that Morton was cut this quickly – he looked good this spring. Matt DeSalvo also looked good this spring, but after pitching 6.1 innings and giving up 5 runs and walking 6, he was clearly not ready for the big time in Atlanta.

Stockman had a strong showing, pitching 2 innings and striking out 3 while giving up no runs. Schreiber pitched 5 innings in 3 outings – he gave up 2 earned runs and walked 3 as well as striking out three.

DeSalvo and Morton will contribute to a strong Richmond rotation that will help AAA hopefully return to the AAA championship. We’ll probably also see Chuck James, Jeff Bennett, and possibly Jo-Jo Reyes end up on the Richmond rotation.

I’m sure that we’ll see Morton and Schreiber back in the big leagues before too long – they both have talent and a future in front of them. For now though, they need a bit more development.

It’s painful to write, but the Braves lost to the Mets in 10 innings earlier today. Atlanta rallied and tied the game 2-2 in the 8th, but New York scored in the bottom of the 10th to take it. Some quick highlights from the game:

Charlie Morton and Blaine Boyer both looked strong, each pitching two innings. They each gave up one hit and struck out one. Morton walked two, but neither pitcher gave up a run.

Jo-Jo Reyes gave up 2 hits (both in the first inning), allowing Angel Pagan to score on a Ramon Castro stand-up triple.

Jordan Schafer had two hits and scored a run (off of a Matt Diaz single) to put the Braves on the scoreboard in the 4th inning. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the 8th to tie the game at 2 runs a piece. Schafer’s now batting .444 in the preseason.

Mets starting pitcher, Mike Pelfrey pitched 3 scoreless innings to start the game, allowing only 2 hits.

Matt DeSalvo pitched hitless 8th and 9th innings for the Braves to allow the game to go into extra innings.

So there you have it. Not a powerful offensive showing by either team, but a good chance to look through the pitching staff to see what we have coming down the pipeline. A hard-fought game into extra innings, despite being a loss, lets us know that baseball season is truly on its way.
