Chipper Jones Should Not-Retire More Often

Written by Jonathan on June 20, 2010 – 9:30 am

In the few days after Chipper Jones sparked media rumors that he would be retiring, and followed that up by not-retiring, he has been a different player on the field.  In the four games he has played in since then (Chipper sat out during one of the games against the Rays) he has had at least a hit every game.

In 16 plate appearances across 4 games, Chipper has reached base safely 8 times for an OBP of .500.  Additionally, he’s batting .429 and slugging .714 with one home run and 4 RBI.

I’m not saying this is a surefire solution, but maybe we need to spark some Chipper Jones retirement rumors more often.  Say, a twice-a-month press conference?  It seems to be just the catalyst he needed…….now if only he can stay healthy enough to keep it up.

UPDATE (6/20): This theory has to be true.  After today’s outing (2-3, 2 BB, 3 RBI, 2 R), Chipper now is batting .471, slugging .824 and has an OBP of .571 since the media buzz started.

John Smoltz To Retire?

Written by Colin on June 4, 2008 – 10:37 am

John Smoltz is going back under the knife for season-ending shoulder surgery. It may also force him to retire.

After being on the DL for five weeks and coming back with a new arm slot to alleviative shoulder issues, Smoltz experienced significant soreness after a disappointing outing on Monday night.

The Braves have a press conference scheduled for 11:30 today and inside sources confirm that Smoltz is likely to retire in addition to announcing that his season is over.

More as it comes, but this could truly be a sad day in Braves history. Smoltz Retiring – I knew it’d come someday but I didn’t want it to be this soon.

Update: Season ending shoulder surgery is scheduled with James Andrews in Birmingham.  Smoltz could be ready for next spring if he doesn’t retire.  Smoltz says he fully intends to continue to pitch if he can.

Julio Hangs It Up

Written by Jonathan on May 4, 2008 – 8:06 pm

Braves fan-favorite, Julio Franco, has decided that his time to retire has finally come.  Julio, who had hoped to play in the majors at age 50, is the oldest player to hit a home run in the major leagues.  This home run was at the age of 48 against Randy Johnson on May 4, 2007; one year ago.  Julio’s 23-year career was played with the Braves, as well as the Phillies, Mets, Indians, Rangers, White Sox, Brewers and Rays.

His career numbers are: .298 batting average, 2586 hits and 173 home runs.  Thanks for everything, Julio.  It was great to have the chance to see you in a Braves uniform for the end of last season.
